6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Spillage If spilt (bulk), wear PVC/rubber gloves, coveralls and a Full-face Class P3 (Particulate) respirator. At high dust levels,
wear an Air-line respirator. Spray with water to prevent dust generation and place in sealable containers for disposal.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Handling Use safe work practices to avoid eye or skin contact and inhalation. Observe good personal hygiene. Prohibit eating,
drinking and smoking in contaminated areas. Wash hands before eating. Remove contaminated clothing and
protective equipment before entering eating areas.
Storage Store in cool, dry, well ventilated area, removed from acids (eg hydrofluoric acid) and foodstuffs. Ensure containers
are adequately labelled, protected from physical damage and sealed when not in use.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION
Ventilation Do not inhale dust. Use in well ventilated areas. In poorly ventilated areas, mechanical extraction ventilation is
recommended. Maintain dust levels below the recommended exposure standard.
Exposure SILICA, CRYSTALLINE - QUARTZ (14808-60-7)
ES-TWA : 0.1 mg/m3 (Silica Quartz, respirable, NOHSC)
Standards
ES-TWA# : 0.1 mg/m3 (QLD); 0.15 mg/m3 (NSW)
WES : 0.2 mg/m3
PPE Wear PVC or rubber gloves and dust-proof goggles or safety glasses. When using large quantities or where heavy
contamination is likely, wear coveralls. Where an inhalation risk exists, wear a Class P2 (Particulate) Respirator. At
high dust levels, wear a Class P3 (Particulate) respirator or a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) with Class P3
(Particulate) filter.

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY cont.
Decomposition
Products
May evolve toxic gases if heated to decomposition.
11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Health Hazard Irritant - slightly corrosive. Use safe work practices to avoid dust inhalation. Chronic over exposure to crystalline
quartz may cause lung disease (silicosis). Crystalline quartz is classified as carcinogenic to humans (IARC Group 1).
Summary
Adverse health effects are not anticipated where dust generation is minimized.
Eye Slightly corrosive - irritant. Exposure may result in lacrimation, pain, redness and possible corneal burns with
prolonged contact.
Inhalation Irritant - slightly corrosive. Over exposure at high levels may result in irritation of the nose and throat with coughing.
Prolonged and repeated inhalation of respirable silica may result in pulmonary fibrosis (silicosis). Crystalline quartz is
classified as carcinogenic to humans (IARC Group 1).
Skin Irritant. Prolonged skin contact or direct contact with abraded skin may result in irritation and possible skin rash.
Ingestion Slightly corrosive. Ingestion may result in burns to the mouth and throat, with vomiting and abdominal pain. Due to
product form, ingestion is not considered a likely exposure route.
12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Environment WATER: If released to waterways, alkaline products may change the pH of the waterway. Fish will die if the pH
reaches 10-11 (goldfish 10.9, bluegill 10.5). SOIL: May leach to groundwater with toxic effects on aquatic life as
above. ATMOSPHERE: Not expected to reside in the atmosphere. Drops or particles released to atmosphere should
be removed by gravity and/or be rained out.
13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS
Waste Reuse/ recycle where possible. Keep product moist to reduce the potential for dust generation and dispose of to an
approved landfill site. Contact the manufacturer for additional information.
Disposal
Legislation Dispose of in accordance with relevant local legislation.
14. TRANSPORT INFORMATION

16. OTHER INFORMATION
Additional The organic compounds in this product is described by the manufacturer as burnt bagasse (sugar cane residue).
The trace elements in this product are described as nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, iron oxides, manganese oxides,
Information
potassium, calcium and magnesium oxides.
SILICA - MEDICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Medical testing for those with frequent or potentially high exposure to silica
(half the Exposure Standard or more) is recommended before beginning work and at regular intervals thereafter.
This should include; Lung function tests - chest x-rays every 1-3 years. If abnormal chest x-ray develops, skin test for
tuberculosis should be done. Any evaluation should include a careful history of past and present symptoms with an
exam. Medical tests that look for damage already done are not a substitute for controlling exposure.
EXPOSURE STANDARDS - TIME WEIGHTED AVERAGES: Exposure standards are established on the premise of
an 8 hour work period of normal intensity, under normal climatic conditions and where a 16 hour break between
shifts exists to enable the body to eliminate absorbed contaminants. In the following circumstances, exposure
standards must be reduced: strenuous work conditions; hot, humid climates; high altitude conditions; extended shifts
(which increase the exposure period and shorten the period of recuperation).
ABBREVIATIONS:
mg/m3 - Milligrams per cubic metre
ppm - Parts Per Million
TWA/ES - Time Weighted Average or Exposure Standard.
pH - relates to hydrogen ion concentration - this value will relate to a scale of 0 - 14, where 0 is highly acidic and 14
is highly alkaline.
CAS# - Chemical Abstract Service number - used to uniquely identify chemical compounds.
M - moles per litre, a unit of concentration.
IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES:
The recommendation for protective equipment contained within this Chem Alert report is provided as a guide only.
Factors such as method of application, working environment, quantity used, product concentration and the
availability of engineering controls should be considered before final selection of personal protective equipment is
made. Information provided by Risk Management Technologies is summarised for ease of use. Additional technical
information is available by calling +61 8 9322 1711.
HEALTH EFFECTS FROM EXPOSURE:
It should be noted that the effects from exposure to this product will depend on several factors including: frequency
and duration of use; quantity used; effectiveness of control measures; protective equipment used and method of
application. Given that it is impractical to prepare a Chem Alert report which would encompass all possible
scenarios, it is anticipated that users will assess the risks and apply control methods where appropriate.
COLOUR RATING SYSTEM: Chem Alert reports are assigned a colour rating of Green, Amber or Red for the
purpose of providing users with a quick and easy means of determining the hazardous nature of a product. Safe
handling recommendations are provided in all Chem Alert reports so as to clearly identify how users can control the
hazards and thereby reduce the risk (or likelihood) of adverse effects. As a general guideline a Green colour rating
indicates a low hazard, an Amber colour rating indicates a moderate hazard and a Red colour rating indicates a high
hazard.

Report Status Chem Alert reports are compiled as an independent source of information by RMT's scientific department, based on
the latest chemical and toxicological research and, where appropriate, in compliance with relevant standards,
guidance notes and legislation. Where available the manufacturer's original MSDS is also provided to Chem Alert
subscribers as a scanned image for their convenience. In many instances Chem Alert reports are compiled on
behalf of manufacturers in which case they serve as the "Manufacturer's MSDS" and are clearly identifed as such on
the relevant reports.
