SECTION 5: FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Specific Hazards: This product is not reactive and does not have any flammability rating. It is non-flammable in liquid form.
Extinguishing Media: Non flammable, however, if burning with some other substance, use water fog (or if unavailable fine
water spray), dry chemical, carbon dioxide or alcohol stable foam.
Fire Fighting Procedures: No specific procedures are needed. Use water to cool exposed containers. Heating can cause
expansion or decomposition leading to violent rupture of containers. If safe to do so, remove containers from path of fire. Spills
and leaks may be washed away with copious volumes of water, fog or spray. For major fires or where the atmosphere is either
oxygen deficient or contains unacceptable levels of combustion products, firefighters must wear self-contained breathing
apparatus with full face-mask and protective clothing.
Hazardous Decomposition products: Nil
Hazchem code: None allocated
SECTION 6: ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Containment Procedures: In the event of a spillage stop and contain the spill for salvage or absorb in inert absorbent
material (e.g. soil, sand, vermiculite) for disposal by an approved method. Prevent run-off of large volumes into drains and
waterways. Sorbitol mixes completely with water. If large-volume contamination of sewers or waterways has occurred, advise
the local emergency services and environmental authorities.
SECTION 7: HANDLING & STORAGE
Handling: Sorbitol 70% Solution is stored in HM-HDPE drums. They must stored upright and must not be stacked on top of
each other. Do not roll drums on an abrasive or uneven road or surface. Keep containers closed at all times 鈥? check regularly
for leaks.
Storage: Stored in HM-HDPE drums with self bung as well as external metallic seal or shrink wrapped bung. Store in tightly
closed containers a cool, dry, well ventilated area, preferably away from direct sunlight, away from heat, sources of ignition and
incompatibles. Protect drums from physical damage. Product can be stored in stainless steel tanks with stainless steel fittings
and pipes (all parts in contact with the material must be stainless steel). It is recommended that product be stored at room
temperature or below. Do not exceed 50掳C.
Incompatibilities: Strong oxidizing agents.
SECTION 8: EXPOSURE CONTROL & PERSONAL PROTECTION
Exposure Standards: Australian Safety and Compensation Commission ASCC (formerly National Occupational
Health & Safety Commission -NOHSC) National Occupational Exposure Standard (NES):
Sorbitol - No exposure standards established. Sorbitol is a humecant and is not volatile in nature.
Engineering Controls: No special requirements.
Ventilation: No special requirements.
Special Considerations for repair and/or maintenance of contaminated equipment: No special requirements.
Personal Hygene: Protective clothing (gloves, coveralls, boots, etc.) should be worn to prevent if excessive and repeated skin
contact or heavy contamination of skin is likely.
Eye Protection: Avoid eye contact by wearing chemical goggles with side shields.
Skin Protection: Excessive and repeated skin contact or heavy contamination of skin should be prevented by wearing
waterproof gloves and protective clothing.
Respiratory Protection: None needed under normal circumstances.
