SECTION 6 鈥? HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Route of Entry Eye Hazardous Eye
Skin absorption Skin contact
Inhalation
Ingestion. Possible, but highly unlikely
Acute Severe skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritation. Burn may not be immediately painful. Severe, permanent
exposure damage can result if caustic is not immediately removed from contact site on the body. Lung effects,
including pulmonary edema, may be delayed as much as 48 hours post-exposure.
H2S is very toxic. At concentrations as low as 1 to 5 ppm, nausea and severe eye irritation may occur.
Sense of smell may be impaired at about 20 ppm, with headache and respiratory tract lung irritation. At
250 to 500 ppm, potentially fatal pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) may occur. Dizziness, sudden
(often fatal) collapse, unconsciousness, and death occur at higher concentrations. Note: Pulmonary
edema may be delayed as long as 48 hours after exposure.
Chronic Dermatitis and denta l erosion expected. Fatigue, and severe nervous and respiratory system symptoms
exposure may follow survival of H 2S poisoning.

SECTION 7 鈥? FIRST AID
Inhalation Move victim to fresh air Give artificial respiration if breathing has stopped and if a qualified AR administrator is
available. Apply CPR if both pulse and breathing have stopped. Obtain medical attention immediately.
Ingestion Never give anything by mouth if the person is unconscious, rapidly losing consciousness, or convulsing. If the
person is conscious, have them drink 8 to 10 ounces of water to dilute the material in the stomach. If milk is
available, give it after the water. Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs spontaneously, have the person
lean forward to avoid aspiration, and repeat administration o f water. Obtain medical attention immediately.
Eye Using gloved hands to hold the affected eye open, flush it with lukewarm, gently flowing fresh water for at least
20-30 minutes. DO NOT INTERRUPT FLUSHING. Take precautions to avoid contaminating unaffected eye or
face. If irritation persists, repeat flushing. Transport victim to emergency medical care facility.
Skin Avoid direct contact. Flush affected area with lukewarm, gently flowing fresh water for at least 20-30 minutes.
DO NOT INTERRUPT FLUSHING. (Keep emergency vehicle waiting if necessary.) Take precautions to avoid
contaminating unaffected body areas. Remove contaminated clothing, boots, watchstraps, etc. under running
water, and discard. If irritation persists, repeat flushing. Transport victim to emergency medical care facility.
SECTION 8 鈥? PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
Personal Gloves Butyl rubber, natural rubber, neoprene, nitrile, polyvinyl chloride, or Viton鈩? preferred.
protective Eye Chemical safety goggles. A face shield may also be needed.
equipment Respiratory NIOSH-approved. SCBA or air line respirator with escape cylinder for confined spaces or work
with S-containing product. An OHS professional should advise on respirator selection. If an
air-purifying respirator is appropriate, use a 鈥淧 series鈥? filter & organic vapour cartridges.
Clothing & Corrosive-resistant apron, as a minimum, when handling product. Coveralls to prevent skin
footwear contact. Completely clean contaminated clothing or footwear before re-use, or discard it.
Engineering Enclose processes. Use (corrosion-resistant) local exhaust ventilation to remove vapour or mist at its site
controls of generation. Handle laboratory samples in a fume hood.
Handling Avoid generating mists or vapours. Keep containers closed. Corrosion-resistant handling & transfer
procedures & equipment. Do not add water; for dilution: gradually add the product to (cold) water, with gentle stirring.
equipment Clean emergency eyewash and shower readily available in the work area.
Leak & spill Restrict access. Avoid contact with material. Ventilate area. Stop leak if it can be done safely. Prevent entry
Procedure into sewers, waterways, or confined areas. Neutralizing chemicals m ay be applied by trained personnel.
Cover with dry earth, sand, clay, or other non-reactive material and shovel into suitable covered
Waste disposalConsult local authorities for advice.
Storage Clean, cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Tightly-closed containers in spill-containment trays. Containers may
develop pressure after long storage. Contact local emergency agency for venting instructions.
Shipping Use secondary protective containers. Stable during transport.
