TOXICOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
ROUTE OF ENTRY: Eyes, skin contact, inhalation, ingestion
EFFECTS OF ACUTE EXPOSURE:
EYE: Contact may cause stinging or burning. Intense watering. Conjunctivitis.
SKIN: May cause drying or cracking with irritation. May cause severe response if confined to skin, or if skin is cut.
INHALATION: May cause irritation of nose , eyes and throat, coughing, dizziness, nausea, difficulty in breathing.
Methylene chloride may affect those with heart conditions. Progressively higher levels over 1000ppm may cause dizziness, drunkeness.
Concentrations as low as 10000ppm can cause unconsciosness, and death. These higher levels may also cause irregular heart beats.
Excessive exposure may inhibit the ability of the blood to transport oxygen. In confined and poorly ventilated areas, vapours may readily
accumulate and can cause unconsciosness and death.
INGESTION: May cause irritation and burning sensation of lips, mouth, throat, pain in swollowing, gastro-intestinal
irritation, abundant salivatipon
EFFECTS OF CHRONIC EXPOSURE:
IRRITANCY: Toxic
RESPIRATORY TRACT SENSITIZATION: no
CARCINOGENICITY: Suspected Yes.
REPRODUCTIVE TOXIN: Contains methylene chloride which has been known to cause cancer in certain laboratory
animals. May also affect those with heart conditions. Use only in well ventilated areas. Toluene may be toxic to
embryo or fetus and may reduce fertility.
TERATOGENICITY: no
MUTAGENICITY: no
SYNERGISTIC MATERIALS: no
EXPOSURE LIMITS: 64 ppm (1988 ACGIH)
PREVENTATIVE MEASURES
GLOVES: Rubber or vinyl gloves.
EYE PROTECTION: Face shield or safety goggles.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Not normally required. For prolonged exposures or if TLV is exceeded, use
approved organic canister, or self contained breathing apparatus.
OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Impervious footwear and clothing.
ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Mechanical ventiliation in confined spaces or when TLV is exceeded.
LEAK AND SPILL PROCEDURE: Provide maximum ventilation. Dyke area and pump spilled material into metal
containers for disposal or reclaim. Absorb remaining material onto sawdust or vermiculite, and place into metal
containers for disposal. Then wet vacuum area of spill.
WASTE DISPOSAL: Dispose in accordance with federal, provincial, and municipal regulations.
STORAGE REQUIREMENTS: Store in a cool, dry place.
HANDLING PROCEDURES: Handle with reasonable care. Avoid breathing vapours. Concentrated vapours are
heavier than air and will collect in low areas such as pits, storage tanks, and other confined areas. Enter such areas
only with proper breathing apparatus and an observer.
