ADDITIONAL HEALTH EFFECTS
EYE: Solid or dust may cause irritation or corneal injury due to
mechanical action.
INGESTION: Single dose oral toxicity is believed to be very low.
No hazards are anticipated from ingestion incidental to
industrialexposure.
INHALATION: The polymer contains traces of ethylidene norbornene
(ENB) which may be released during storage and processing. Under
normal storage and processing conditions with adequate ventilation
and exhaust the ACGIH TLV-C for ENB should not be reached.
Exposure to ENB vapors may cause irritation of the respiratory
tract, experienced as nasal discomfort and discharge, coughing and
possibly accompanied by chest pains, headache or dizziness. Eye
contact with ENB vapor may be irritating.
Fumes may be evolved during hot processing of compounds of
"NORDEL" which may irritate eyes, nose and throat. Dust may cause
irritation to the upper respiratory tract.
SKIN: Essentially non-irritating to skin. Mechanical injury
only. Skin absorption is unlikely due to physical properties.
CARBON BLACK
Immediate effects of overexposure to Carbon Black by inhalation
may include irritation of the nose, throat, and lungs with cough,
difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
If particles from Carbon Black contact the eye, mechanical
irritation with tearing, pain or blurred vision may result.
Significant skin permeation, and systemic toxicity, after contact
with Carbon Black appears unlikely. There are no reports of human
sensitization.
Epidemiologic studies demonstrate no significant risk of human
cancer from exposure to Carbon Black. While some reports cite an
increased incidence of pulmonary abnormalities, such as decreased
pulmonary function and radiological changes among Carbon Black
workers, other reports show no correlation between exposure and
effects on pulmonary function or disease.
Increased susceptibility to the effects of Carbon Black may be
observed in persons with pre-existing disease of the lungs.

FIRST AID MEASURES
----------------------------------------------------------------------
First Aid
INHALATION
If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give
artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Call a physician.
SKIN CONTACT
The compound is not likely to be hazardous by skin contact but
cleansing the skin after use is advisable.
If molten material gets on skin, cool rapidly with cold water. Do
not attempt to remove material from skin. Obtain medical treatment
for thermal burn.
EYE CONTACT
In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water
for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician.
INGESTION
No specific intervention is indicated as compound is not likely to
be hazardous by ingestion. Consult a physician if necessary.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Flammable Properties
Autoignition : >350 C (>662 F)
The possibility of fire exists when masticating or blending
"NORDEL" in the internal mixers. Combustible vapors can
accumulate in the air space or the mixer and may ignite if the AOT
or AIT is reached and ventilation is poor.
Page 4
Material Safety Data Sheet
----------------------------------------------------------------------
NOR028
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and air can result in
autooxidation which is an exothermic reaction that can cause the
polymer to reach the AIT.
Pouring or conveying pellets may cause static ignition
hazards. Use proper grounding.
HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION PRODUCTS: Hazardous combustion
products may include and are not limited to carbon monoxide
and carbon dioxide. Under fire conditions polymers
decompose. The smoke may contain polymer fragments of
varying composition in addition to unidentified toxic and/or
irritating compounds.
Extinguishing Media
Water, Foam, Dry Chemical, CO2.
Fire Fighting Instructions
Evacuate personnel to a safe area. Keep personnel removed and
upwind of fire. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus. Wear
full protective equipment.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Safeguards (Personnel)
NOTE: Review FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES and HANDLING (PERSONNEL)
sections before proceeding with clean-up. Use appropriate
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT during clean-up.
Spill Clean Up
Recover undamaged and minimally contaminated material for reuse
and reclamation. Shovel or sweep up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
HANDLING AND STORAGE
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Handling (Personnel)
Avoid contact with eyes. Avoid contact with skin. Avoid
breathing vapor or dust.
Handling (Physical Aspects)
Avoid dust generation. Close container after each use. Keep away

from heat, sparks and flames.
Storage
This product should not be stored outdoors or in direct
sunlight.
Store in a well ventilated place. Store in a cool, dry
place. Keep container tightly closed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Engineering Controls
Use local ventilation to control fumes from hot processing. Use
static controls. Static charges can build up and ignite dust or
solvent laden atmospheres.
Personal Protective Equipment
EYE/FACE PROTECTION
Wear safety glasses. Wear coverall chemical splash goggles and
face shield when possibility exists for eye and face contact due
to splashing or spraying of molten material. A full face mask
respirator provides protection from eye irritation.
RESPIRATORS
A NIOSH/MSHA approved air purifying respirator with an organic
vapor cartridge with a dust/mist filter may be permissible under
certain circumstances where airborne concentrations are expected
to exceed exposure limits. Protection provided by air purifying
respirators is limited. Use a positive pressure air supplied
respirator if there is any potential for an uncontrolled release,
exposure levels are not known, or any other circumstances where
air purifying respirators may not provide adequate protection.
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
If there is potential contact with hot/molten material, wear heat
resistant clothing and footwear.

TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Animal Data
ETHYLIDENE NORBORNENE
This product contains traces of ethylidene norbornene, which is
moderately toxic with a 4-hour LC50 of 732 ppm (inhalation,
mouse).
CARBON BLACK
Oral ALD, rat: > 25,100 mg/kg
Repeated inhalation exposure of animals to Carbon Black caused
inflammation of the respiratory tract, lungs and emphysema.
Repeated exposure to high doses of Carbon Black by ingestion or
skin contact caused no significant toxicological effects.
No adequate studies have been conducted in animals to define the
carcinogenicity of Carbon Black by ingestion. In several skin
painting studies using various Carbon Blacks no carcinogenicity
was observed. Tests by inhalation for carcinogenicity in rats
show significant increases in lung tumors in female rats but not
male rats. In another study using female mice exposed by
inhalation to Carbon Black there was no increase in the incidence
of respiratory tract tumors. Researchers conducting the rat
inhalation studies believe that these effects probably result from
the massive accumulation of small dust particles in the lung which
overwhelm the normal lung clearance mechanisms. This represents
"lung overload" phenomenon, rather than a specific chemical effect
of the dust particle in the lung.
Tests have shown that this material does not cause genetic damage
in bacterial or mammalian cell cultures. Tests in animals for
genetic toxicity have produced mostly negative results. No animal
data are available to define developmental or reproductive
toxicity.

DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Waste Disposal
Preferred options for disposal are (1) recycling, (2) incineration
with energy recovery, and (3) landfill. The high fuel value of
this product makes option 2 very desirable for material that
cannot be recycled. Treatment, storage, transportation, and
disposal must be in accordance with applicable federal,
state/provincial, and local regulations.
