HO(CH2- CH2- O)n- H, where n>=4. The numeral in
its name identifies the molecular weight of the
polyethylene glycol. Polymers with a molecular
weight of greater than 1000 are solids.


Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES


SWALLOWED
路 If swallowed do NOT induce vomiting.
路 If vomiting occurs, lean patient forward or place on left side (head-down position, if
possible) to maintain open airway and prevent aspiration.
路 Observe the patient carefully.
路 Never give liquid to a person showing signs of being sleepy or with reduced awareness;
i.e. becoming unconscious.
路 Give water to rinse out mouth, then provide liquid slowly and as much as casualty can
comfortably drink.
路 Seek medical advice.

EYE
If this product comes in contact with the eyes:
路 Wash out immediately with fresh running water.
路 Ensure complete irrigation of the eye by keeping eyelids apart and away from eye and
moving the eyelids by occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids.
路 If pain persists or recurs seek medical attention.
路 Removal of contact lenses after an eye injury should only be undertaken by skilled
personnel.

SKIN
If skin or hair contact occurs:
路 Flush skin and hair with running water (and soap if available).
路 Seek medical attention in event of irritation.

INHALED
路 If fumes or combustion products are inhaled remove from contaminated area.
路 Lay patient down. Keep warm and rested.
路 Prostheses such as false teeth, which may block airway, should be removed, where
possible, prior to initiating first aid procedures.
路 Apply artificial respiration if not breathing, preferably with a demand valve
resuscitator, bag-valve mask device, or pocket mask as trained. Perform CPR if necessary.
路 Transport to hospital, or doctor.

Section 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES


EXTINGUISHING MEDIA
路 Water spray or fog.
路 Foam.
路 Dry chemical powder.
路 BCF (where regulations permit).

FIRE FIGHTING
路 Alert Fire Brigade and tell them location and nature of hazard.
路 Wear breathing apparatus plus protective gloves.
路 Prevent, by any means available, spillage from entering drains or water courses.
路 Use water delivered as a fine spray to control fire and cool adjacent area.
路 DO NOT approach containers suspected to be hot.
路 Cool fire exposed containers with water spray from a protected location.
路 If safe to do so, remove containers from path of fire.

For liquids:
Clean up all spills immediately.
Wear impervious gloves and safety glasses.
Wipe up and absorb small quantities with vermiculite or other absorbent material.
Place in clean drum then flush area with water.
For solids:
路 Clean up all spills immediately.
路 Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
路 Wear impervious gloves and safety glasses.
路 Use dry clean up procedures and avoid generating dust.
路 Sweep up or
路 Vacuum up (consider explosion-proof machines designed to be grounded during storage and
use).
路 Place spilled material in clean, dry, sealable, labelled container.

MAJOR SPILLS
Avoid all personal contact. Wear impervious gloves and safety glasses.
Prevent, by any means available, spillage from entering drains or water
courses.
Shut off all possible sources of ignition and increase ventilation.

For liquids:
Stop leak if safe to do so.
Absorb or cover spill with sand, earth, inert material or vermiculite.
For solids:
Recover uncontaminated product in clean, dry, labelled containers.
Collect and seal in labelled drums for disposal.
Wash spill area with large quantities of water.

Atmosphere should be regularly checked against established exposure standards to ensure
safe working conditions are maintained.

When handling, DO NOT eat, drink or smoke.
Keep containers securely sealed when not in use.

MATERIAL DATA
For powdered forms:
The polyethylene glycols are extremely low in oral toxicity, are not
significantly irritating to the eyes or skin, and are not absorbed
through the skin in toxic amounts. vapour pressures are extremely low and
inhalation exposure is limited to mists. Based on experimental data and
human experience, these substances do not present significant hazards to
health in the workplace.

PERSONAL PROTECTION

ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS

SWALLOWED
The material is. non-toxic if swallowed.
Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.

EYE
The material is moderately discomforting to the eyes.
The material may be irritating to the eye, with prolonged contact causing inflammation.
Repeated or prolonged exposure to irritants may produce conjunctivitis.

SKIN
The material may be mildly discomforting to the skin.
Not considered an irritant through normal use.
The material may cause skin irritation after prolonged or repeated exposure and may
produce on contact skin redness, swelling, the production of vesicles, scaling and
thickening of the skin.

INHALED
Not normally a hazard due to non-volatile nature of product.
Not normally a risk due to low vapour pressure at ambient temperatures.
Inhalation hazard is increased at higher temperatures.
