Effects of Exposure:
Aluminum compounds have many commercial uses and are commonly found in industry. Many of these materials are active
chemic ally an d thu s exh ibit dan gero us tox ic and reactiv e pro perties. Inha lation o f fine alum inum oxid e particles is associated with
shaver's disease. (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition)
Route(s) of Entry: Inhalation.
Target Organs: May affect the lungs
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Overexposure: Pre-existing resp iratory disord ers.
Acute E ffects:
Inhalation: Toxic by inhalation of dust. Inhalation of finely divided dust may cause coughing, mucous production and shortness of
breath.
Ingestion: No acute health effects recorded.
Skin : No acute health effects recorded.
Eye: Dust may cause eye irritation.
Chro nic Effects: Inhalation: Inhalation of finely divided dust may cause lung damag e affecting breathing capacity. No other
chronic health effects recorded.
Carcino genicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No
EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
INHALATION: Remove to fresh air; keep warm and quiet; give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.
INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting; seek medical attention. Never induce vomiting or give
anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
SK IN: Remove contaminated clothing; brush material off skin; wash affected area with mild soap and water; seek medical attention.
EYES: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES
Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: We ar appropriate respira tory and protective equipm ent specified in
section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA ) air filter
and place in a closed container fo r proper d isposal. Tak e care not to raise dust.
Waste Disposal Method: Dispose o f in accord ance w ith Loca l, State and Federal W aste Dispo sal Regu lations.
VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION
Respiratory Protection: NIOSH/MS HA approv ed dust respirator if ventilation controls are not possible or are inadequate.
Ventilation: Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at or below the PEL. General exhaust is not recommended.
Protective Gloves: Rubber gloves
Eye Protection: Safety glasses
Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Protective gear not necessary for aluminum oxide.

Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating and
smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench
shower and facilities for washing.
