IV FIRE AND EXPLOSION H AZARDS DATA

Flash Point: N/A Method U sed: Non-flam ma ble
Autoignition Temp ( oC): No data
Flam mab le Limits: Upper: N/A Lower: No data

Extingu ishing Media: Use suitable extinguishing media for surrounding material and type of fire.
Special Firefighting Procedures: Firefighters m ust w ear fu ll face, self-con tained breathing apparatus with full pro tective clothing to
prevent contact with skin and eyes. Fumes from fire are hazardous. Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: Barium zirconate may emit toxic fumes if involved in a fire.

V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of barium zirconate have not been
thoroughly investigated and recorded. Barium poisoning is virtually unknown in industry, although the potential exists when the
soluble forms are used. When ingested or given orally, the soluble, ionized barium com pounds exert a profound effect on all muscles
and esp ecially smooth m uscles. The heart rate is slowe d and may stop in systole. O ther effects are inc reased intestinal peristalsis,
vascular construction, bladder contraction, and increased voluntary muscle tension.

Zirconium compounds are not an important industrial poison. Most zirconium compounds in common use are insoluble and
considered inert. Pu lmonary g ranuloma in zirconium w orkers h as been reported . (Sax, Da ngero us Prop erties of Indu strial Materials)
Acute E ffects:

Inhalation: May cause irritation to the upper respiratory system, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, colic, diarrhea, rapid respiration, high
blood pressure, irregular heart action, convulsions, paralysis and acute barium poisoning.
Ingestion: May cause irritation to the gastrointestinal tract, vomiting, colic, diarrhea, slow irregular pulse, transient hypertension,
convulsions, tremors, muscular paralysis and acute barium poisoning.
Skin : May cause irritation.
Eye: May cause irritation.

Chro nic Effects:

Inhalation: May cause pulmonary granulomas and chronic barium poisoning.
Ingestion: May cause chronic barium poisoning.
Skin : May cause skin granu lomas and d ermatitis.
Eye: May cause co rneal op acity and blindne ss.

Routes of Entry: Inhalation, skin, eyes
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated By Exposure: Pre-existing resp iratory disord ers.
Target Organs: May affect the respiratory system , central nervous system , heart, skin and eyes.
Carcino genicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if needed and seek medical attention
INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting, seek medical attention. Never give anything by mouth or
induce vomiting in an unconscious person.
SK IN: Rem ove contaminated clothing, b rush material off skin, w ash w ith soap and w ater, seek m edica l attention if sym ptom s persist.
EYE: Imm ediately flush eyes with lukewarm water for at least 15 min utes. Seek me dical attention if sym ptom s persist.

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: We ar appropriate respira tory and protective equipm ent. Isolate spill
area and provide ventilation. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA ) air filter and place in a closed
con tainer for proper disp osal. T ake care n ot to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method: Dispose o f in accord ance w ith Loca l, State, and Fed eral regulation s.

VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type): NIOSH -approved dust, mist, vapor cartridge respirator.
Ventilation: Use local exhaust to maintain concentration below PEL, TLV. General exhaust is recommended.

Protective Gloves: Rubber gloves
Eye Protection: Safety glasses

Other Protective Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store in a co ol, dry area. Store in tightly sealed container. Wa sh tho roughly
after handling.

Wo rk Practices: Imp lem ent en gineering and wo rk practice controls to re duc e an m aintain concentration of ex posure at low levels.
Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or
smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain safety drench shower, facilities for washing and
eyewash capable of sustained flushing.

The abo ve inform ation is believ ed to be co rrect, but do es no t purp ort to b e all inclu sive an d sha ll not be used as a guid e.
ESPI shall not be held liab le for any d am ages resultin g from h and ling o r from contact with the abov e pro duc t.
