3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Viscous white liquid with ammonia odor which may cause eye, skin, and
upper respiratory irritation. Long-term exposure to ethylene glycol may
cause kidney damage. Sensitive individuals may develop allergic
reaction. Avoid skin and eye contact. Do not inhale mists or fumes.
POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS
EYES: Contact may cause eye irritation.
SKIN: May cause skin irritation. Individuals sensitive to polyisoprene may develop immediate or delayed
allergic reaction.
INHALATION: Inhalation of mists or vapors may cause irritation of the upper respiratory tract.
INGESTION: Accidental ingestion of this product may cause gastrointestinal blockage. Ingestion of large
quantities may cause ethylene glycol toxicity.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS: Overexposure to this product can cause eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation.
Ethylene glycol toxicity causes central nervous system (CNS) depression with symptoms resembling those of
alcohol intoxication (drowsiness, slurred speech, stupor, coma, etc.).
MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE: Product may aggravate pre-existing skin disorders.
CHRONIC: Long-term exposure to ethylene glycol may damage the kidneys.
CARCINOGENICITY:
NTP: No OSHA: No IARC: No
TARGET ORGANS: Eyes, skin, respiratory tract
4. FIRST AID MEASURES
EYE CONTACT: Flush eyes with water for 15 minutes then rinse with USP eyewash. If irritation persists, seek
medical attention.
SKIN CONTACT: Remove contaminated clothing and wash affected area with soap and water. If irritation
persists, seek medical attention.
INHALATION: Remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult administer oxygen. If breathing has stopped, give
artificial respiration. Seek medical attention.
OTHER: If accidental ingestion occurs, drink 1 glass of water and seek medical attention.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
FLAMMABLE PROPERTIES
FLASHPOINT: Not Applicable
NFPA HAZARD CLASSIFICATION: (as ethylene glycol)
HEALTH: 1 FLAMMABILITY: 1 REACTIVITY: 0
FLAMMABLE LIMITS: LEL: Not Applicable UEL: Not Applicable
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Water fog, carbon dioxide, dry chemical foam. Direct water stream may tend to
scatter and spread flames.
FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: Thermal decomposition will produce carbon oxides, small amounts of
nitrous oxides, and other oxidation products. Thermal decomposition of latex will give flammable gas. Dry
product may continue to smolder and eventually re-ignite.
FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT: Firefighters should wear a NIOSH/MSHA-approved self-contained breathing
apparatus (SCBA) operated in positive pressure mode and full turnout gear or bunker gear.
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Isolate hazard area and deny entry to unauthorized and/or unprotected personnel. Clean-up personnel should
wear appropriate protective equipment. Absorb or dike spill with suitable sorbent material (fuller's earth, clay,
etc.). Prevent entry into waterways and sewers. Place waste in clean dry closed container for later
reuse/disposal. Advise authorities if product has entered or may enter sewers, watercourses, or extensive land
areas.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Store out of direct light in cool, dry area in tightly closed containers. Protect from freezing. Avoid breathing
vapor, mist, or fumes. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the work area. Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact.
Avoid eye contact. Launder contaminated clothing. Keep containers closed when not in use.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE (CONTINUED)
Do not use product to coat unprotected copper or any alloy containing manganese. These metals cause rapid
degradation of the rubber.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Under normal conditions (ambient temperature and pressure) and use none
required.
SKIN PROTECTION: Chemical resistant gloves, aprons, coveralls, etc
EYE PROTECTION: Splash goggles or face shields when eye contact may occur.
Revision Date: September 7, 1999

ENGINEERING CONTROLS: General ventilation. Local exhaust ventilation should be used in areas where
heating or misting occur.
PERSONAL CONTROL MEASURES:
Air sampling for ethylene glycol: 1.0 碌m glass fiber filter and silica gel tube (NIOSH 5500)
Air sampling for ammonia: H2SO4-treated silica gel tube with 0.8 碌m mixed cellulose ester pre-filter (optional)
(NIOSH 6015)
OTHER: Emergency eyewash stations

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
STABILITY: Stable.
INCOMPATIBILITY: Acidic materials may cause latex to coagulate. Unprotected copper or manganese alloys
may cause degradation of rubber.
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: Thermal decomposition will produce carbon oxides, flammable
gases, and other oxidation products.
HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: Will not occur.
11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
INGESTION: Ingestion of 398 mg/kg(LDLo) ethylene glycol has produced headache, nausea, and vomiting in
humans.
SKIN: Adverse effects from ammonia are not anticipated at the low levels present in this product.
Hypersensitivity reactions to polyisoprene include rhinitis, systemic urticaria, conjunctivitis, bronchospasm or
anaphylactic shock.
EYE: Administration of 100 mg of ethylene glycol(1 H) to rabbit eyes produced mild irritation.
Revision Date: September 7, 1999

INHALATION: Inhalation of 5000 ppm ammonia can cause immediate death from spasm, inflammation or
edema of the larynx. Ethylene glycol is generally not well inhaled (due to low vapor pressure) unless heated or
misted.
CHRONIC: Human volunteers were exposed for 20 to 22 H/day to between 1.4 to 27 ppm mean daily
concentrations of ethylene glycol for 4 weeks. Some volunteers complained of throat irritation, low backache,
3
and mild headache. Concentrations which exceeded 56 mg/m (approximately 21.7 ppm) for part of the day
produced upper respiratory tract irritation in most of the volunteers. Volunteers found ethylene glycol
concentrations of 80 ppm intolerable producing burning sensation along the trachea and burning cough.
OTHER: Ethylene glycol was negative in the mouse lymphoma and Salmonella assays and for the induction of
chromosomal aberrations and sister-chromatid exchanges in cultured Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells.
