3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
Silver metal is practically non-toxic, acute toxicity by ingestion is low.
However, chronic absorbtion may cause"Argyria", a blue/grey discolouration
of various tissues. Localised argyria may occur on the skin from handling
metallic silver as a result of particles becoming embedded in the skin, or in
the respiratory tract following inhalation of silver dust. Generalised argyria is
recognised by the pigmentation of the skin, eyes and nails and results from
the inhalation of silver salts. This is only normally manifest after many years
of gross over-exposure. The metal is non-irritating to the skin. If particles or
splinters penetrate the skin, local irritation and secondary infection may
result. 聽

4. FIRST AID MEASURES
As supplied, this material does not present an acute hazard. As a dust,
First Aid
inhalation may cause irritation of the respiratory tract. Eye contact will
produce mechanical irritation. 聽 聽

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Not combustible. No special fire-fighting procedures are necessary. Use
any extinguishing agent suitable for the surrounding fire. 聽 聽 聽 聽

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Collect in a suitable container for re-use, re-cycling or for disposal. 聽

be worn. There are no special requirements if used under ordinary
conditions and with adequate ventilation. 聽

halogenated hydrocarbons and oxidising agents. Protect from physical
damage. Powder and other active forms should be kept in tightly sealed
containers under nitrogen.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
U.K. Occupational Exposure Standard for silver metal - 0.1 mg/m鈥?
for soluble compounds (as Ag) - 0.01 mg/m鈥?

USA ACGIH TLV for silver metal - 0.1 mg/m鈥?
for soluble compounds (as Ag) - 0.01 mg/m鈥?

German MAK for silver - 0.01 mg/m鈥?

(Roseman, Moss and Kon, Journal of Occupational Medicine , Vol 21, No. 6,
recommend that monitoring of the silver in air concentration and periodic slit
lamp eye examinations of the exposed workforce are helpful ways to assess
the bodily silver content). 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
Silver is more malleable and ductile than any other metal, except gold. It is
an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. The metal is blackened by
ozone, hydrogen sulfide and sulfur. It readily dissolves in dilute nitric acid
and hot concentrated sulfuric acid, but is only superficially attacked by
hydrochloric acid. Silver is soluble in fused alkali hydroxides in the presence
of air, in fused alkali peroxides and in alkali cyanides in the presence of air or
oxygen. Most silver salts are light sensitive. If ammoniacal silver solutions
are prepared from the metal, they should never be stored as explosive silver
compounds may be formed. Silver is incompatible with oxalic or tartaric
acids as these salts decompose, possibly explosively, on heating. The
action of silver on nitric acid in the presence of ethanol may also form
explosive silver compounds. Finely divided silver and hydrogen peroxide
solutions may explode and the powder will react with iodoform with

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
The only toxicological data available for silver metal is for colloidal silver.
LD50 (oral-mouse) 100 mg/kg and LDLo (ivn-rabbit) 49 mg/kg.
Massive silver metal is practically non-toxic. It is not carcinogenic or
mutagenic.
