2. COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON THE COMPONENTS
PALLADIUM/CALCIUM CARBONATE CATALYST
Product Formal Name
Product Chemical Family .Not Specified

3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
The catalytic properties of this material will promote the oxidation and
possible ignition of flammable vapours. After use, all catalysts which may
contain absorbed hydrogen may ignite when dried in air, especially in the
prescence of organic materials. A used, filtered catalyst should, therefore, be
kept wet and out of contact with combustible liquids and vapours. There is no
specific toxicological data, but the toxicity by ingestion is thought to be low. 聽 聽

4. FIRST AID MEASURES
As supplied, this material does not present an acute hazard. As a dust,
First Aid
inhalation may cause irritation of the respiratory tract. Eye contact will
produce mechanical irritation. 聽 聽

remove from exposure and allow to rest in fresh air. Seek medical advice if
First Aid - Inhalation
symptoms persist. 聽
irrigate with water or isotonic saline solution.Seek medical 聽
First Aid - Eyes
First Aid - Skin

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Not flammable. Use any extinguishing media suitable for the surrounding fire.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Remove or eliminate all sources of flammable liquids and vapours. Collect up
the spillage, wash with water to reduce its organic content and store in a
water wetted condition in a sealed container. Wash the site of the spillage
with large volumes of water. 聽

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Wear suitable eye protection. Respiratory protection should be used in non-
Handling (JM)
ventilated areas and in areas where the exposure is above the TLV. Do not
eat, drink, smoke or apply cosmetics whilst handling. 聽

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE (continued)
Store in a closed container in a cool, dry chemical store. 聽

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
UK Occupational Exposure Standard for calcium carbonate - total inhalable
dust - 10 mg/m鈥?
respirable dust - 5 mg/m鈥?
US ACGIH TLV for calcium carbonate (for total dust containing no asbestos
and <1% crystalline silica) - 10 mg/m鈥?

If a risk of inhalation exists, users should wear an appropriate filter type
respirator. Suitable eye protection, such as goggles, should also be worn. 聽 聽 聽

9. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
grey powder
Appearance
No odour.
Odour
not applicable
pH
not applicable.
Boiling Range/Point
calcium carbonate decomposes at about 825掳C
Melting Point
not applicable.
Flash Point
not flammable.
Flammability
not applicable.
Auto-flammability
not explosive.
Explosive Properties
not oxidising.
Oxidising Properties
not applicable.
Vapour Pressure
greater than 3gm/cc, dependant upon metal loading
Density
Water - insoluble
Solubility in Water
Fat - no data
no data.
Partition Coefficient

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
Calcium carbonate decomposes on heating, giving carbon dioxide and
leaving a corrosive residue of calcium oxide. Carbon dioxide is also evolved
on reaction with acids. Calcium carbonate ignites and burns fiercely with
fluorine.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
No specific toxicological data is available for this material. The following data
is available for the Calcium carbonate support -
LD50 (oral rat) 6450mg/kg, Skin rabbit 500mg/24hours - moderate irritant,
Eye rabbit 0.75mg/24 hrs - severe iritant.
The applied metal is of very low toxicity and is not thought to present an acute
hazard.

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
No real threat is posed to the environment by this material. While generally
insoluble and innocuous, large amounts of solids can build up on the bottom
of water-ways, smothering vegetation and spawning grounds. 聽 聽

13. DISPOSAL (continued)
Material for disposal should be washed with water to reduce the organic
content to a minimum and returned to the refinery for metal recovery in a
water wetted condition.

14. TRANSPORT INFORMATION
As fresh material - not restricted.
Used material being returned for recovery must be classified before transport
and, dependant upon classification, all appropriate regulations complied with.
