3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
Harmful if swallowed.
Main Hazards
There is no toxicity data available for this material, but it is likely to be harmful
by ingestion and irritating to the skin and eyes. Toxic fumes are given off on
heating.
It is not thought that soluble salts of ruthenium give rise to an allergy problem,
similar to that observed with platinum-halogen salts. 聽

4. FIRST AID MEASURES
Inhalation of the dust will irritate the upper respiratory tract. Nasal ulceration
First Aid
or perforation may be caused by exposure to ruthenium salts, but the effects
disappear in the absence of further exposure. Eye contact will cause
discomfort. Repeated or prolonged skin contact will result in mild irritation.
There is no evidence that ruthenium salts give rise to an allergy problem,
similar to that observed with platinum halogeno complexes. 聽 聽 聽 聽

use. 聽

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Although the material is not flammable, toxic fumes will be produced if
involved in a fire. The residue, ash or char left after a fire may have catalytic
properties and may promote the re-ignition of flammable materials and
vapours. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and personal protective
equipment. Use any extinguisher suitable for the surrounding fire. 聽 聽

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES (continued)
Wearing gloves and eye protection, sweep up the spillage and store in
sealed, plastic containers, ready for disposal. Wash the area with water. 聽 聽

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Good industrial hygiene practices should be observed. Use only under
Handling (JM)
conditions of good local ventilation. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes. Do
not eat, drink, smoke or apply cosmetics whilst using this material. 聽
Store in an air-tight container under vacuum or an inert atmosphere, in a cool
Storage (JM)
dry chemical store.
Keep separate from incompatible materials and flammable or combustible
materials.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
No exposure controls or limits have been established for ruthenium or its
compounds. This material should be handled in a fume cupboard. If a risk of
inhalation exists, users should wear an appropriate filter type respirator.
Suitable eye protection, such as goggles, should be worn. 聽
