3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
The catalytic properties of this material may give it a low ignition temperature.
The catalytic properties will also promote the oxidation and possible ignition
of flammable liquids and vapours.
Precious metal catalysts on finely divided carbons can undergo dust
explosions in a similar manner to carbon itself and other materials such as
flour. The problem is minimised by avoiding dust generation and also by
minimising metal losses.
After use, all catalysts which contain absorbed hydrogen may ignite when
dried in air, especially in the presence of organic materials. A used, filtered
catalyst should, therefore, be kept wet and out of contact with combustible
vapours and liquids.
4. FIRST AID MEASURES
As supplied, this material does not present an acute hazard. As a dust,
First Aid
inhalation may cause irritation of the respiratory tract. Eye contact will
produce mechanical irritation. 聽 聽

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
This material is not classified as flammable, but if involved in a fire, will burn
with the possible production of toxic carbon monoxide. The residue, ash or
char will have catalytic properties and will promote the ignition of flammable
liquids and vapours. Firefighters should wear a self-contained breathing
apparatus and personal protective equipment. Use any extinguisher suitable
for the surrounding fire. 聽 聽
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Remove or eliminate all sources of flammable liquids and vapours. Collect up
the spillage, wash with water to reduce its organic content and store in a

water wetted condition in a sealed container. Wash the site of the spillage
with large volumes of water. 聽
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Good industrial hygiene practices should be observed. Avoid contact with
Handling (JM)
skin and eyes. Do not eat, drink, smoke or apply cosmetics whilst using this
material. This material will catalyse the oxidation of combustible organic
vapours, care must be exercised when catalysts are brought into contact with
organic liquids and/or combustible vapours in the presence of oxygen or air.
The risk of ignition can be reduced by cooling both the catalyst and the
solvent before mixing and performing the mixing under an inert atmosphere
such as nitrogen, or by removing oxygen from the system to eliminate the
ignition potential.
Since many catalysts are pyrophoric after use in a hydrogenation reaction,
they should, ideally, be filtered under an inert atmosphere. If this is not
possible, then the filtered solid should not be allowed to dry such that air is
drawn through it, before it is washed with water to minimise the organic
content. The damp solid should be stored in sealed containers whilst
awaiting metal recovery. 聽 聽
Store in a sealed container in a cool, dry chemical store. Keep separate from

flammable materials.

UK HSE OES for platinum metal - 5 mg/m鈥?
US ACGIH TLV for platinum metal - 1 mg/m鈥?
France VME for platinum metal - 1 mg/m鈥?
Holland MAC for platinum metal - 1 mg/m鈥?
UK HSE OES for graphite (total inhalable dust) - 10 mg/m鈥?
UK HSE OES for graphite (respirable dust) - 5 mg/m鈥?
US ACGIH TLV for graphite (all forms) - 2 mg/m鈥?
France VME for graphite - 2 mg/m鈥?
Holland MAC for graphite - 2 mg/m鈥?
If a risk of inhalation exists, users should wear an appropriate filter type
respirator. Suitable eye protection should also be worn.
It should be noted that although platinum metal is practically non-toxic,
soluble platinum salts, especially the halogeno complexes, are highly
allergenic and will cause Type 1 sensitisation in susceptible individuals. The
symptoms are asthma, urticaria (nettle-type rash), rhinitis and conjunctivitis
and there is no known antidote. 聽 聽 聽 聽

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
This material is supplied in a stable condition. Due to its catalytic properties,
the dehydrogenation of the lower alcohols and compounds such as
cyclohexane may readily cause ignition. Most other solvents will ignite with
difficulty. However, care should be always be taken when mixing catalysts
and organic materials. 聽
11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
No toxicological information is available but this material is not thought to
present an acute hazard.
12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
No specific information is available, but this material is not thought to present
an ecological hazard. 聽
13. DISPOSAL
Material for disposal should be washed with water to reduce the organic
content to a minimum and returned to the refinery for metal recovery in a
water wetted condition.
14. TRANSPORT INFORMATION
As fresh material - not restricted.
Used material being returned for recovery must be classified before transport
and, dependant upon classification, all appropriate regulations complied with.
