3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
This material has an oral LD50 in the range 50 - 500 mg/kg, and is therefore
classified as being toxic by ingestion and, by inference, by inhalation. It is
also an eye irritant.
There is no evidence that Ruthenium compounds give rise to allergic
reactions similar to those observed with Platinum compounds. 聽

4. FIRST AID MEASURES
Symptoms of overexposure may include the following-
First Aid
Inhalation - irritation of the respiratory tract.
Ingestion - nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.
Eye contact - redness and irritation.
Skin contact - possible irritation and dermatitis.

First-aid treatment for acute overexposure.

remove from exposure and allow to rest in fresh air. Seek medical attention. 聽

remove contaminated clothing and wash skin with soap and water. If
First Aid - Skin
symptoms persist, seek medical attention.Launder clothing before re-use.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Although the material is not flammable, toxic fumes will be produced if
involved in a fire. The residue, ash or char left after a fire may have catalytic
properties and may promote the re-ignition of flammable materials and
vapours. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and personal protective
equipment. Use any extinguisher suitable for the surrounding fire. 聽 聽

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES (continued)
Wear protective clothing. Sweep up spillage and store in sealed containers
ready for disposal.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Local exhaust ventilation should be used and protective clothing, including
Handling (JM)
gloves and eye protection, should be worn. Do not eat, drink, smoke or apply
cosmetics whilst handling. 聽
Store in a closed container in a cool, dry chemical store. Keep separate from
Storage (JM)
incompatible materials such as easily oxidisable or flammable compounds. 聽

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
No exposure controls or limits have been established for ruthenium or its
compounds. This material should be handled in a fume cupboard. If a risk of
inhalation exists, users should wear an appropriate filter type respirator.
Suitable eye protection, such as goggles, should be worn. 聽

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
This material is supplied in an air stable condition, no specific reactive
hazards are known to Johnson Matthey.
Users should note that the use of borohydride solutions to reduce Ruthenium
salt solutions to the metal is reported as producing solids which are explosive
when dry.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
LD50 (oral rat) 50 - 500 mg/kg, positive eye irritant.

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
The effect of ruthenium compounds on the environment has not been
investigated but the hazard is thought to be low. Ruthenium is not
concentrated by plants or animals. Natural processes will tend to produce
insoluble compounds. 聽
