4 - First Aid Measures



AFTER INHALATION

   If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing give

   artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.



AFTER SKIN CONTACT

   In case of skin contact, flush with copious amounts of water for

   at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes.

   Call a physician.



AFTER EYE CONTACT

   In case of contact with eyes, flush with copious amounts of

   water for at least 15 minutes. Assure adequate flushing by

   separating the eyelids with fingers. Call a physician.



AFTER INGESTION

   If swallowed, wash out mouth with water provided person is

   conscious. Call a physician immediately.



GENERAL INFORMATION

   Local zoos may have samples of antivenin. Other possible sources

   of antivenin can be found in "Snake Venom Poisoning"; F.E.

   Russell; Scholium International Inc.: Great Neck, NY 1983.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF EXPOSURE

   Swelling is most marked following bites by the Eastern

   diamondback rattlesnake. It is less marked following Western

   diamondback bites, and even less severe following bites by the

   Prairie, Timber, Red, Pacific, Mojave, and Black-tailed

   rattlesnakes, and the sidewinders. * To the best of our

   knowledge, the chemical, physical, and toxicological properties

   have not been thoroughly investigated.

   Skin Contact: May cause skin irritation.

   Skin Absorption: May be harmful if absorbed through the skin.

   Eye Contact: May cause eye irritation.

   Inhalation: May be harmful if inhaled. Material may be

   irritating to mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract.

   mixtures comprised mostly of proteins, many of which have

   enzymatic activity. At least 25 enzymes have been found in snake

   venoms, though no one snake venom has been found to contain all

   of them. Some venoms may have one or several proteolytic

   enzymes. Those venoms rich in proteolytic activity are usually

   associated with significant tissue destruction.
