V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

Iron compounds have varying toxicity. Some iron compounds are suspected carcinogens. In general, ferrous
compou nds can cause liver and kidney damage, altered respiratory rates and convulsions. (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial
Materials, eig hth edition.)

Acute E ffects:
Inhalation: SEV ERE IRRIT AN T A ND CO RRO SIVE. M ay cau se acute iron toxicity. Larg e am ounts are corrosive and m ay cau se
respiratory failure, pneumoconiosis, pulmonary edema and possible death.
Ingestion: SEVERE IRRITANT AN D CORRO SIVE. May cause chemical burns to the mouth, gastric irritation, abdominal pain and
diarrhea. Moderately toxic by ingestion.
Skin Contact: SEVERE IRRITANT AN D CORRO SIVE to moist or wet skin.
Eye Contact: SEVERE IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE.

Chro nic Effects:

Inhalation: May cause pulmonary fibrosis, chronic iron poisoning, pathological deposition of iron in the body tissue, cytogenic and
reprod uctive effec ts.
Ingestion: May cau se damag e to the liver.
Skin : No chronic health effects recorded.
Eyes: No chronic health effects recorded.

Most Likely Routes of Entry: Inhalation, ingestion, skin and eye.

Target Organs: May affect the respiratory system, liver, kidney, skin and eye.
Medical Conditions, if any, Aggravated by the Chemical: Pre-existing resp iratory and skin disord ers.

Carcino genicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES

INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air. Keep warm and quiet. Give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.
INGESTION: Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.
SK IN: Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water. Seek medical attention.
EYE: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately.

Co nditio ns to Av oid: Moisture.
Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid): Acids, ethylene oxide, potassium, sodium.

Haz ardous D ecomposition Produc ts: Hydrogen chloride and fumes of chlorine.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: Wearing full protective equipment, isolate spill area and provide
ventilation. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA ) air filter and place in a closed container for proper
dispo sal. Take ca re no t to raise d ust.

Waste Disposal: Con sult state, local or federal regulation s for proper disp osal.

VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection: NIOSH - approved d ust-mist-vapor cartridge respirator.
Ventilation Req uirements: Han dle in a con trolled environme nt in an inert gas such as argon. Use loca l exhaust to ma intain
concentration at low expo sure levels.

Protective Gloves: Rubber, neoprene or nitrile gloves
Eye Protection: ANSI app roved safety goggles.

-Iron Chloride Anhydrous 2-
Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Keep containe r tightly closed. Sto re in a coo l, dry, well-ventilated area. W ash
thoroug hly after use .

Other Precautions: Iron chloride is deliquescent. Handle and store in a controlled environment and in an inert gas such as argon.

Wo rk Practices: Imp lem ent en gineering and wo rk practice controls to re duc e and ma intain c onc entration o f exp osure at low levels.
Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or
smok ing. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with comp ressed air.
