IV FIRE AND EXPLOSION H AZARDS DATA

Flash Point: N/A Autoignition Temperature: N/A
Flam mab le Limits: Upper: N/A Lower: N/A

Extingu ishing Media: Use suitable extinguishing media for surrounding material and type of fire.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus with full protective clothing
to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Fumes from fire are hazardous. Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazard: If involved in a fire, lithium oxide may emit toxic fumes. Strong alkali. Lithium oxide
readily ab sorbs carb on dioxide an d wa ter from the atmosphere. At eleva ted tem peratures it attacks glass, silica and m any m etals.

V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of o ur know ledge the chem ical, ph ysical and toxicolog ical pro perties of lithium o xide have not been thoro ugh ly
investigated and reported.

The toxicity of lithium com pou nds is a function of their solub ility in w ater. Lithium ion h as cen tral nervou s system toxicity.
The initial effects of lithium exposure are tremors of the hands, nausea, micturition, slurred speech, sluggishness, sleepiness, vertigo,
thirst, and increased urine volume. Effects from continued exposure are apathy, anorexia, fatigue, lethargy, muscular weakness, and
changes in ECG. Long-term exposure leads to hypothyroidism, leukocytosis, edema, weight gain, polydipsia/polyuria (increased
water intake leading to increased urinary output), memory impairment, seizures, kidney damage, shock, hypotension, cardiac
arrhythmias, coma, death. (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition)
Acute E ffects:
Inhalation: SEV ERE IRRIT AN T A ND CO RRO SIVE. Cau ses irritation to the respiratory tract and m ucou s mem branes.
Ingestion: SEVERE IRRITANT AN D CORRO SIVE. May cause central nervous system effects, circulatory failure and
cardiovascular collapse.
Skin : SEVERE IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE.
Eye: SEVERE IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE.

Chro nic Effects:

Inhalation: May cause pulmonary edema and lung dam age.
Ingestion: May cause gastrointestinal irritation, renal dysfunction, derangement of neuromuscular activity, diabetes and kidney
damage.
Skin : May be an irritant and corrosive.
Eye: May cause blurred vision.

Routes of Entry: Inhalation, ing estion, skin an d eyes.

Target Organs: May affect respiratory system, skin and eyes.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing resp iratory and skin disord ers.

Carcino genicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Remove to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention
immediately.
INGESTION: Do not induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention.
SK IN: Imm ediately wash affected area with plenty of water, remove contaminated clothing. Obtain medical assistance imm ediately.
EYE: Flush with copious amounts of water, including under eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention immediately.

VI REACTIVITY DATA

Stability: Stable

Co nditio ns to Av oid: None
Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid): Water, steam.

Haz ardous D ecomposition Produc ts: Lithium hydroxide, oxides of lithium, lithium and h ydro gen g as.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: We ar appropriate respira tory and protective equipm ent specified in
Section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA ) air filter
and place in a closed container fo r proper d isposal. Tak e care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method: Dispose o f in accord ance w ith Loca l, State and Federal regu lations.

VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection: Wear a NIOSH/M SHA app roved respirator when adequate ventilation is not available.
Ventilation: Handle in a controlled atmosphere in an inert gas such as argon. Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at low
levels. General exhaust is not recommended.

Protective Gloves: Rubber
Eye Protection: Safety goggles or glasses

-Lithium Oxide 2-
Other Protective Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store in tightly sealed container. Store in a c ool, d ry are a. W ash thorough ly
after handling.

Other Precautions: Lithium oxide readily absorbs carbon dioxide and water from the atmosphere. Handle and store in a controlled
environment and in an inert gas, such as argon.

Wo rk Practices: Imp lem ent en gineering and wo rk practice controls to re duc e and ma intain c onc entration o f exp osure at low levels.
Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating and
smok ing. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with comp ressed air.

The abo ve inform ation is believ ed to be co rrect but do es no t purp ort to b e all inclu sive an d sha ll be used only as a gu ide.
ESPI shall not be held liab le for any d am age resulting from h and ling o r from contact with the abov e pro duc t.
