IV FIRE AND EXPLOSION H AZARDS DATA

Flash Point (Method used): N/A Autoignition Temperature: N/E
Flamm able Lim its in Air: Lower: N/A Upper: N/A

Extingu ishing Media: Flammable in powdered form. Do not use water, CO 2 or halogenated extinguishers. Use dry chemical
extinguishing agents, dry sand or dry ground dolomite.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus with full protective clothing
to prevent contacts with skin and eyes. Fumes from fire are hazardous. Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazard: Ma y have an explosive reactio n w ith hy drogen + hy drogen pero xide. Ma y have a reaction w ith
formic acid or sodium tetrahydroborate, releasing flamm able and explosive hydrogen gas. May have a violent reaction with isopropyl
alcohol and OF 2S. Under the proper conditions it undergoes hazardous reactions with aluminum , arsenic, carbon, methanol, ozonides
and sulfur.

V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of palladium m etal have not been
thoroughly investigated and recorded.

Palladium metal may be a skin sensitizer. In the laboratory, palladium appears to bind to many cell components; blocks the
action of a number of enzym es and interferes with use of energy by nerves and muscles; induces lung malfunction and produces
abnormal fetuses. Lethal intravenous doses cause appetite loss, hemolysis, renal deposition and bone marrow damage.
Acute E ffects:

Inhalation: Powder or dust may cause abrasive irritation to the respiratory system.
Ingestion: Poorly absorbed by the body when ingested.
Skin : May cau se abrasive irritation and possibly may b e a skin sensitizer.
Eye: May cause abrasive irritation.

Chro nic Effects: Inhalation may induce lung malfunction and produce abnormal fetuses. No other chronic health effects recorded.

Medical Conditions, if any, Aggravated by the Chemical: Pre-existing resp iratory disord ers.
Routes of Entry: Inhalation, ing estion, skin an d eyes.

Target Organs: No target organs recorded.
NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No EPA: No
Carcino genicity:

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Rem ove victim to fresh air, kee p w arm and quiet, give o xyg en if breathing is d ifficult. Se ek m edica l attention if
sym ptom s persist.
INGESTION: No data available but one should obtain medical attention.
SK IN: Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water. Seek medical attention
if irritation persists.
EYES: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if symptoms
persist.

VI REACTIVITY DATA

Stability: Stable
Co nditio ns to Av oid: Heat, ope n flam e, sparks.
Incompatibility (Material to Avoid): Hydrogen , strong ox idizers and acids, flamm able gase s and o rganic liqu ids.

Haz ardous D ecomposition Produc ts: Palladium oxide, h ydro gen g as.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: We ar appropriate respira tory and protective equipm ent specified in
section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA ) air filter
and place in a closed container fo r proper d isposal. Tak e care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method: Dispose o f accord ing to Local, State, and Federa l regulations.

VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type): NIOSH /MSH A app roved du st-mist-vapor respirator.
Ventilation: Laboratory fume hood. General exhaust is recommended.

Protective Gloves: Rubb er glove s.
Eye Protection: ANSI app roved safety goggles.

IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store in a tightly sealed containe r, in a cool, dry , well-ven tilated area. Wash
thoroughly after handling.

-Palladium 2-
Wo rk Practices: Imp lem ent en gineering and wo rk practice controls to re duc e and ma intain c onc entration o f exp osure at low levels.
Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating and
smok ing. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with comp ressed air.

Other Precautions: Lab coat and apron, flame and chemical resistant coveralls, eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench
shower and hygienic facilities for washing.

SARA 311 and 312 H azard Categories:
Immediate (Acute) Health Hazard: Yes
Delayed (Chronic) Health Hazard: No
