IV FIRE AND EXPLOSION H AZARDS DATA

Flash Point: N/A Method U sed: Non-flam ma ble
Autoignition Temp: For Nickel: 1890 oC for pieces
Flam mab le Limits: Upper: N/A Lower: N/A

Extingu ishing Media: Use suitable extinguishing media for surrounding materials and type of fire.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus with full protective clothing
to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Fumes from fire are hazardous. Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazard:

Nickel: Contact with strong acids may form flamm able and explosive hydrogen gas. Contact with sulfur may cause evolution of
heat. Nickel reacts violently with fluorine, amm onium nitrate, hydrazine, am mon ia, (H 2+diox ane), perform ic acid, pho sphorous,
selenium , sulfur and (Ti+KC lO 3).
Chromium: Ignites and is potentially explosive in atmospheres of carbon dioxide. Chromium reacts violently or explosively when
heated with amm onium nitrate and bromine pentafluoride. Chromium has an incandescent reaction with nitrogen oxide or sulfur
dioxide. *Powdered forms of these materials are flammable.

V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

Chromium: Confirmed hum an carcinogen with experimental tumorigenic data. Hum an poison by ingestion with gastrointestinal
effects (Sax, Dangerous Prop erties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition).
Nickel: Confirmed carcinogen with experimental carcinogenic, neoplastigenic, tumorigenic and teratogenic data. Poison by
ingestion, intratrach eal, intraperito neal, subcutaneou s and intraveno us routes. A n experim ental teratog en. Ingestion of solub le salts
causes nausea, vo miting a nd diarrhea. Hypersensitivity to nickel is com mo n and can cau se allergic reaction s, contact dermatitis,
pulmonary asthma, conjunctivitis and inflamm atory reaction around nickel containing medical implants and prosthesis (Sax,
Dange rous Properties of Industrial M aterials, 8 th edition).

Acute E ffects:

Inhalation: Nickel may cause irritation to the upper respiratory tract, nasal cavities and pulmonary asthma.
Ingestion: Nickel is poison by ingestion. Large doses may cause intestinal disorders, convulsions and asphyxia. Chromium m ay
cause g astrointestinal effects.
Skin : Nickel may cause irritation.
Eye: Chromium may cause irritation.

Chro nic Effects:

Inhalation: Nickel may cau se pneom itis. Chrom ium m ay cause histologic fibrosis of lungs, nasal and/or lung cancer.
Ingestion: May cause nickel toxicity.
Skin : Nickel may sensitize the skin (nickel itch). May cause allergic dermatitis, eczematous dermatitis and may be accompanied a
week later with superficial skin ulcers, which may discharge and become crusted.
Eye: Nickel du st may cause co njunctivitis.

Routes of Entry: Inhalation, ing estion, skin an d eyes.

Target Organs: Nickel may affect the nasal cavities, lungs and skin. Chromium may affect the respiratory system.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing respira tory disorders, p ulm ona ry functions, asthma and skin
disorders.
Carcino genicity: NTP: Yes IARC M onographs: Yes OSH A Regulated: Yes

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air. Keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention
immediately.
INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately. Never induce vomiting
or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
SK IN: Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water, seek medical attention
immediately.
EYE: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately.

me thanol, org anic so lvents, alum inum , alum inum chloride, eth ylene, p-d ioxane, stro ng acids, w ood and other com bustibles.
Chromium : Strong oxidizing agents, ammonium nitrite, bromine pentafluoride and carbon dioxide.

Haz ardous D ecomposition Produc ts: Nickel Carbonyl, oxides of nitrogen, hydrogen gas
Hazardous Polymerization: Will Not Occur

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: We aring full pro tective clothing and respiratory protection eliminate all
sources of ignition. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA)
air filter an d place in a closed container for proper disp osal. T ake care n ot to raise dust.
