2. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
DANGER! Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Harmful if absorbed through skin. May cause eye damage and
blindness ifswallowed. Causes eye irritation. Combustible. May cause dizziness and drowsiness. May
cause heart muscle damage. May cause liver and kidney damage.
Odor: Ester-like
Form: Liquid Color: Clear, colorless

POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS

INGESTION
Toxic May cause the followingeffects: - slight discomfort in the mouth, throat and abdomen This
product hydrolyzes in the stomach to form methanol. Methanol may cause nausea, abdominal pain,
vomiting, headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, leg cramps, restlessness,
confusion, drunken behavior, visual disturbances, drowsiness, coma, and death. There may be a
delay of several hours between swallowing methanol and the onset of signs and symptoms. The
effects observed are in part due to acidosis and partially to cerebral edema. Visual effects include
blurred vision, diplopia, changes in color perception, restriction of visual fields, complete blindness.
Ingestion of moderate quantities of methanol also produces metabolic acidosis. Onset of symptoms
may be delayed up to 48 hours. 60-200 ml methanol is fatal dose for most adults. Ingestion of as little
as 10 ml methanol has caused blindness. With massive overdoses, liver, kidney and heart muscle
injuries have been described.

SKIN
Brief contact is not irritating. Prolonged contact may result in: - more severe irritation - discomfort or
pain - local redness - swelling - possibly tissue destruction

INHALATION
Short-term harmful health effects are not expected from vapor generated at ambient temperature.
However, this material is capable of forming methanol if hydrolyzed. Methanol vapor may cause

Species: Rabbit.; 1,922 mg/kg;

Species: Rabbit.; 2,972 mg/kg;

OTHER
Shown to be nephrotoxic in rabbits by 24-hour occluded contact at doses of 2.0 ml/kg and above, and
at 4.0 ml/kg there was a necrotizing cystitis of the urinary bladder. The nephrotoxic effect is due to
both the mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and chloropropyltrimethoxysilane., The following information
is for the component of gamma-Chloropropyltrimethoxysilane., In a repeated vapor exposure study (4
weeks), test-article related changes were detected histopathologically in the adrenal glands, kidney,
liver, and urinary bladder. This material produced a statistically significant increase in bone marrow
micronuclei of female mice by exposure to 200 ppm vapor with no effect seen at 100 ppm. In a
subchronic repeated vapor exposure study (90 days), test-article related findings included
histopathologic changes in the urinary bladder and kidneys of rats exposed to 99 ppm. The NOEL was
determined to be 5 ppm. This material was mutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA98 in the
absence of metabolic activation and in strains TA100, TA1535, and TA1537 both with and without
metabolic activation. This material was positive for genotoxicity in the presence of metabolic activation
in an in vitro mouse lymphoma mutagenesis assay, and negative in the absence of metabolic
activation. This material was not mutagenic in an in vitro CHO/HGPRT forward mutation assay. This
material was not genotoxic in an in vivo mouse micronucleus test by intraperitoneal injection.
