Exposure Limits (TWAs) in Air
Chemical Name CAS Number % ACGIH TLV OSHA PEL STEL
Dichloromethane 75-09-2 100 50 ppm 25 ppm 125 ppm

Section III - Hazard Identification
Routes of Exposure: Dichloromethane can affect the body if it is inhaled or swallowed,
or if it comes in contact with the eyes or skin.
Summary of Acute Health Hazards
Ingestion: Can cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Inhalation: Excessive inhalation of vapors can cause nasal and respiratory irritation,
Central nervous system effects including dizziness, weakness, fatigue, nausea, headache
and possible unconsciousness, and even death.
Skin: Can cause irritation.
Eyes: Can cause irritation.
Summary of Chronic Health Hazards: Exposure to methylene chloride can raise the
level of carbon monoxide in the blood causing cardiovascular stress. Dichloromethane
has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals. It has been listed as a possible
carcinogen by IARC and NTP. There is adequate information to associate methylene
chloride exposure during pregnancy with harm to the fetus.
Effects of Overexposure: Overexposure to this material (or its components) has
apparently been found to cause the following effects in laboratory animals: Liver
Abnormalities, Lung Damage, Kidney Damage. Narcotic in high concentrations.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: N/A
Section IV - First Aid Measures
Ingestion: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Drink large amounts of water to dilute acid.
GET PROMPT MEDICAL ATTENTION.

Product Name: Dichloromethane 1 of 4
Inhalation: If inhaled, move to fresh air. If breathing has stopped, give artificial
respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. GET PROMPT MEDICAL
ATTENTION.
Skin: Promptly flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated
clothing.
Eyes: Wash eyes immediately with large amounts of water, for at least 15 minutes, lifting
the lower and upper lids. Contact lenses should not be worn when working with this
material. GET PROMPT MEDICAL ATTENTION.
Section V - Fire Fighting Measures
Flash Point: N/A Autoignition Temperature: 1033潞F, 556潞C
Lower Explosive Limit: 13.0% Upper Explosive Limit: 23.0%
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: This product is not flammable in air. Forms
flammable vapor-air mixtures in lager volumes and may be an explosion hazard in a
confined space. Combustion may produce irritants and toxic gases. Combustion
byproducts may include hydrogen chloride and phosgene.
Extinguishing Media: Water Fog, Foam, Carbon Dioxide, or Dry Chemical. Use water
spray to keep fire-exposed containers cool.
Special Firefighting Procedures: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus with a full
facepiece operated in the positive pressure demand mode when fighting fires.
Section VI - Accidental Release Measures
Small Spill: Absorb liquid on paper, vermiculate, floor absorbent, or other absorbent
material and transfer to hood.
Large Spill: Persons not wearing protective equipment should be excluded from area of
spill until clean-up has been completed. Stop spill at source. Dike area of spill to prevent
spreading, pump liquid to salvage tank. Remaining liquid may be taken up on sand, clay,
earth, floor absorbent, or other absorbent material and shoveled into containers.
Section VII - Handling and Storage
Keep away from incompatible substances. Store in a well-ventilated, properly drained
area out of the sun. Avoid storage on wood floors or near wooden walls, etc. Diking of
storage tanks if recommended. Protect from physical damage.
Other Precautions: Contaminated absorbent may be deposited in a landfill in
accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Section VIII - Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
Respiratory Protection: If workplace exposure limits(s) of product or any component is
exceeded (see section IX), a NIOSH/MSHA approved air supplied respirator is advised in
absence of proper environmental control. OSHA regulations also permit other
NIOSH/MSHA respirators (negative pressure type) under specified conditions (see your
safety equipment supplier), engineering or administrative controls should be implemented
to reduce exposure.
The OSHA acceptable ceiling concentration is 1000 ppm. The acceptable maximum peak
above the acceptance ceiling concentration for an 2-hour shift is 200 ppm for a maximum
duration of 5 minutes in any 2 hours. NIOSH recommends a limit of 75 ppm, 8-hour

Product Name: Dichloromethane 2 of 4
TWA; 500 ppm 15 minute ceiling. Ventilation: Provide sufficient mechanical (general
and/or local exhaust) ventilation to maintain exposure below TLV(s).
Protective Clothing: Wear resistant gloves such as:, Polyvinyl Alcohol. To prevent
repeated or prolonged skin contact, wear impervious clothing and boots.
Eye Protection: Chemical splash goggles in compliance with OSHA regulations are
advised; However, OSHA regulations also permit other type safety glasses. (Consult your
safety equipment supplier)
Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: N/A
Work/Hygienic Practices: Employees who handle dichloromethane should wash their
hands before eating, smoking, or using toilet facilities.
