3. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Melting Point: 1371-1482掳C Vapor Pressure: 1 mmHg @ 1787掳C
Specific Gravity (@60掳F): >7.6 (of iron dust)
Boiling Point: 2850-3150掳C Solubility in Water: insoluble
Appearance: Near spherical or angular loose metallic particles; Blue-gray, gray-black in color. odorless.

4. FIRE AND EXPLOSION DATA
Flash Point: Information not available
Flammable Limits: Information not available
Autoignition Temperature (of solid iron in oxygen): 930掳C
Solid massive form of material is not combustible. Fire and explosion hazards are moderate when material is in the form of dust and
exposed to heat or flame, chemical reaction, or contact with powerful oxidizers. Fires have been reported in piles of steel lines or
scrap; probably due to contamination from oil or other materials which support combustion.
Fire Extinguishing Methods: Use special mixtures of dry chemical or sand. Firefighters should wear self-contained breathing
apparatus and protective clothing.

5. REACTIVITY DATA
Solid, massive material is stable at ordinary temperatures, but dust created by breaking-down during use presents moderate fire and
explosion hazards. Material may be incompatible with acids, bases, and oxidizers. Molten metal may react violently with water. For
additional information, users should consult data sheets on individual component elements.
Hazardous Decomposition Products: None

6. HEALTH HAZARD DATA
TLV: See Section 2.
Permissible Exposure Limit: See Section 2.
Primary Routes of Entry: Inhalation of dust or fume formed during use or particles or dust in eyes.
Under normal handling & use, exposure to the massive form of carbon steel shot / grit presents few health hazards in itself. The expo-
sure levels in Section 2 are relevant to fumes and dust. Special precautions should be taken if product is contaminated: See Section 9.

HEALTH HAZARD DATA CONT...
Chronic overexposure to iron oxide fume may cause an apparently benign pneumoconiosis (siderosis) with few or no symptoms.
Overexposure to dusts and especially fumes containing the component elements of carbon steels may cause skin, nose, mouth and eye
irritation and lung changes in workers leading to pulmonary and other disabling diseases.
Overexposure to manganese dusts and fumes may cause metal fume fever with flu-like symptoms. Chronic overexposure can cause
manganese poisoning. Early symptoms include headache, apathy, sleepiness and weakness or cramps in the legs. Continued overex-
posure can affect the central nervous system.
FIRST AID
Eye Contact: Flush well with water to remove particulate. Get medical attention.
Skin Contact: Brush off excess dust. Wash area well with soap and water.
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Get medical attention.
Ingestion: Seek medical help if large quantities of material have been ingested. (Ingestion of significant amounts of metal
are unlikely

7. SPILL PROCEDURES
Loose particles on floors can create unstable, hazardous walking conditions. Clean up promptly. If large quantities of dust are spilled,
remove by vacuuming or wet sweeping to prevent concentrations of airborne dust. Clean-up personnel should wear respirators and
protective clothing.
Dust collected from blasting / peening operations always contain contaminants from the work pieces. Follow Federal, State and Local
regulations regarding disposal.

8. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION
Use general and local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations of dust or fumes below the TLV. Employees should wear
MSHA or NIOSH respirators for protection against airborne dust or fumes.
Approved safety glasses or goggles should be worn when working in general area of blast cleaning/peening operation and with dusty
materials. Safety eyewash stations should be provided in close proximity to work areas.
Pre-employment and periodic medical examinations should include attention to neurological health and pulmonary function. Chest X-
rays should be included if symptoms are present.
Food should not be consumed in the work area.

9. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Keep product dry. Observe floor loading limitations.
Use good housekeeping practices to prevent accumulations of dust and keep airborne dust concentrations at a minimum. Avoid
breathing dust or fumes.
Store material away from incompatible materials and keep dust away from sources of ignition.
The company has no control over the product or its use after it leaves our facilities. The company assumes no liability for loss or dam-
age incurred from its proper or improper use.
This information is presented and complied from sources considered to be reliable and is accurate to the best of our knowledge and
belief but is not guaranteed.
