3. Hazard Identification

Appearance and Odor: Clear liquid with medicinal odor
Primary Health Hazards: Exposure to high concentrations has a narcotic effect which may, produce
dizziness, drowsiness, headache, staggering, unconsciousness, and possibly death.
Primary Route(s) of Exposure:
Ingestion: Not a primary route for occupational use of product. Ingestion of isopropyl alcohol can
cause drowsiness, unconsciousness, and possibly death. Gastrointestinal pain, cramps, nausea,
vomiting, and diarrhea may also result.
鈱? Skin: Brief direct contact causes mild irritation, drying, swelling, and stinging. Prolonged and/or
repeated contact may cause irritation, redness, burning, drying, and cracking of the skin. Contact
may result in skin absorption but symptoms of toxicity are not anticipated by this route alone under
normal conditions of use.
鈱? Inhalation: Vapors and mists irritate the nose and throat. Inhalation of higher concentrations may
cause headaches, vomiting, and coma. Inhalation of very high concentration or prolonged exposure
may cause unconsciousness or death.
鈱? Eye: Severe eye irritant. Vapors will irritate the eyes. Liquids and mists can severely irritate or
damage the eyes causing stinging, tearing, redness, swelling, and may cause corneal burns.

3. Hazard Identification (cont鈥檇.)

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Dermatitis
Signs and Symptoms of Exposure:
Acute Health Hazards: NAP
Chronic Health Hazards: Substance may cause effects on the CNS, resulting in depression. Substance
may also cause skin effects such as dermatitis. Persons with pre-existing skin disorders or impaired liver,
kidney, or pulmonary function may be more susceptible to the effects of this agent.
Interactions with other chemicals may enhance the toxicity of isopropyl alcohol. Pretreatment or pre-
exposure with isopropyl alcohol may increase the hepatoxic potential of chlorinated hydrocarbons
such as chloroform, 1, 1, 2 trichloroethane and carbon tetrachloride.
Carcinogenicity Listing:
NTP: Not Listed
IARC Monographs: (Group 3) not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans.
OSHA Regulated: Not Listed

4. Emergency and First-Aid Procedures

Ingestion: If large quantity swallowed, give two glasses of water (pint/0.5 liter) if victim completely
conscious/alert. Do not induce vomiting unless directed to do by medical personnel. Seek medical
attention if symptoms develop.
Eye Contact: Flush with water to remove. Seek medical help if irritation or discomfort persists.
Skin Contact: Immediately remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin with mild soap and water. Get
medical help if irritation or discomfort persists.
Skin Absorption: Immediately flush skin with water. Seek medical help if irritation develops.
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Seek medical help if persistent irritation, severe coughing, or breathing
difficulty occurs.
Note to Physician: If medical assistance is necessary, have copies of this MSDS available.

5. Fire and Explosion Data

Flash Point (Method Used): 52掳F
LFL = 2 UFL = 12.7
Flammable Limits:
Extinguishing Media: Foam, dry chemical, and carbon dioxide.
Autoignition Temperature: 750掳F
Special Firefighting Procedures: Extinguishing media 鈥? carbon dioxide and dry chemical, foam. Self-
contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing should be worn in chemical fires. Water may
be ineffective, serving only to spread product, but may be used to cool containers. If only water is
available, use it in the form of a fog. This material may produce a floating fire hazard in extreme
conditions.
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: Isopropanol is flammable and may be ignited by heat, sparks,
flame, or other source of ignition. Vapors may travel considerable distances to a source of ignition
where they may ignite, flashback, or explode. Vapors are heavier than air and may accumulate in
low areas. It is recommended that containers be tightly closed and isolated from heat, electrical
equipment, and flame. A closed container could possibly explode when exposed to extreme heat.

6. Accidental Release Measures

Steps to be Taken In Case Material Is Released or Spilled: Eliminate all sources of ignition and
ensure all handling equipment is electrically grounded and tools and equipment are non-sparking.
Ventilate areas of leak or spill. Contain and recover liquid when possible. Dike and contain spill with
inert absorbent material such as clay, sand, earth or commercially available material. Place material
in container for disposal. Wear safety glasses and rubber gloves to minimize exposure.

7. Handling and Storage

Precautions to be Taken In Handling and Storage: Follow standard industrial practices when handling
this product or empty containers. Avoid getting product on skin, eyes, or clothing. If contact with the
product occurs, remove effected clothing and wash with soap and water. Do not expose sealed
containers to temperatures above 40 degree Celsius. Containers should be bonded and grounded
for transfers to avoid static sparks. Storage and use areas should be designated No Smoking areas.
Use non-sparking type tools and equipment, including explosion proof ventilation. Containers of this
material may be hazardous when empty since they retain product residues (vapors, liquid); observe
all warnings and precautions listed for the product. Avoid excessive hot or cold temperatures. Keep
containers tightly closed when not in use.
Protect from direct sunlight. Small quantities of peroxides can form on prolonged storage. Exposure to
light and/or air significantly increases the rate of peroxide formation. If evaporated to a residue, the
mixture of peroxides and isopropanol may explode when exposed to heat or shock.

8. Exposure Control Measures, Personal Protection

Personal Protective Equipment:
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION 鈥? Under normal conditions of use, respiratory protection is not required.
If the exposure limit is exceeded, use NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator with organic vapor
absorbing cartridges. The respirator program must comply with OSHA and ANSI standards.
EYE PROTECTION 鈥? Chemical safety glasses recommended.
PROTECTIVE GLOVES 鈥? Chemically resistant neoprene and nitrile rubber gloves are recommended.
OTHER PROTECTIVE CLOTHING OR EQUIPMENT 鈥? Eye wash station.
WORK/HYGIENE PRACTICES 鈥? Wash hands before eating, drinking, smoking, and at the end of the
shift.
Ventilation:
LOCAL EXHAUST 鈥? Provide local exhaust as needed so that exposure limits are met.
MECHANICAL (GENERAL) 鈥? Provide general ventilation in processing and storage areas so that
exposure limits are met.
SPECIAL 鈥? None
OTHER 鈥? None
