Appearance and Odor: Rejects 鈥? Gray, fibrous mass with or without plastic and metal having a slight
paper odor. Pulper tail 鈥? Plastics, metal and other scrap material wound together.
Primary Health Hazards: The primary health hazards posed by this product are thought to be due to
exposure to dust (when product is dry).
Primary Route(s) of Exposure:
Ingestion:
鈱? Skin: Dust, fiber, water, organics, glass chips
鈱? Inhalation: Dust
鈱? Eye: Dust
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Cellulose dust may aggravate pre-existing
respiratory conditions or allergies.
Chronic Health Hazards: Paper (cellulose) dust is a biologically inert dust that has little or no effect on
the lungs and does not produce significant organic disease or toxic effect when allowable exposure
limits are met.

3. Hazard Identification (cont鈥檇.)

Carcinogenicity Listing:
NTP: Not listed
IARC Monographs: Not listed
OSHA Regulated: Not listed

4. Emergency and First-Aid Procedures

Ingestion: Not applicable for product in purchased form.
Eye Contact: Dust may mechanically irritate the eyes, resulting in redness or watering. Treat dust in
eye as foreign object. Flush with water to remove dust particles. Get medical help if irritation
persists.
Skin Contact: Not applicable for product in purchased form.
Skin Absorption: Cellulose dust of certain species can elicit allergic contact dermatitis in sensitized
individuals, as well as mechanical irritation resulting in erythema and hives. Some debris is sharp-
edged and could cause shallow cuts or slivers. Get medical help if rash, irritation, or dermatitis
persists. Use appropriate first aid for cuts and slivers.
Inhalation: Excessive dust concentrations may cause unpleasant deposit or obstruction in the nasal
passages, resulting in dryness of nose, dry cough, and headaches. Remove to fresh air. Get
medical help if persistent irritation, severe coughing or breathing difficulty occurs.
Note to Physician: None

5. Fire and Explosion Data

Flammable Limits: LFL = UFL =
Explosion Hazards鈥?
Extinguishing Media: Water
Autoignition Temperature: 400掳 - 500掳F (204掳 - 260掳C)
Special Firefighting Procedures: None
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: Depending on moisture content, particle diameter, and rate of
heating, cellulose dust may explode in the presence of an ignition source. An airborne concentration
of 30,000 mg/m3 is often used as the LEL for cellulose pulp.

6. Accidental Release Measures

Steps to be Taken In Case Material Is Released or Spilled: Not applicable for product in purchased
form. Paper dust may be swept or vacuumed for recovery or disposal. Use NIOSH/MSHA-approved
dust respirator and goggles where ventilation is not possible and exposure limits may be exceeded.

7. Handling and Storage

Precautions to be Taken In Handling and Storage: No special handling precautions are required.
Keep away from open flame and other sources of ignition.

8. Exposure Control Measures, Personal Protection

Personal Protective Equipment:
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION 鈥? Not applicable for product in purchased form. A NIOSH/MSHA-
approved dust respirator is recommended when allowable exposure limits may be exceeded.
PROTECTIVE GLOVES 鈥? Not applicable for product in purchased form.

are recommended if the product is used in such a way as to generate high dust levels.
OTHER PROTECTIVE CLOTHING OR EQUIPMENT 鈥? Not applicable for product in purchased form.
Outer garments may be desirable in extremely dusty areas.
WORK/HYGIENE PRACTICES 鈥? Not applicable for product in purchased form.
Ventilation:
LOCAL EXHAUST 鈥? Provide local exhaust as needed so that exposure limits are met.
MECHANICAL (GENERAL) 鈥? Provide general ventilation in processing and storage areas so that
exposure limits are met.
SPECIAL 鈭? None
OTHER 鈥? None
