    3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION

The solution has a pH in the range 9.8 - 10.2 and is non-irritating to skin or
eyes. It has been found to be a strong sensitizer by the Magnusson &
Kligman test on animals and so may cause skin sensitization by skin
                                          contact.
The solution has been shown not to produce allergic reactions (Type 1
sensitisation) in humans. It should be noted that if platinum-halogen
complexes are prepared from this material, they will be highly allergenic,
causing Type 1 sensitisation in susceptible individuals.

The addition of strong bases, or heating the solution may give rise to the
                                          evolution of ammonia gas.

Users should note that this material is not included in the"European
Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances" (EINECS) and has
only been the subject of a"limited announcement" within the United Kingdom.
In compliance with this notification, the phrase"Caution, substance not yet
fully tested" is assigned to the label.

    4. FIRST AID MEASURES

Although this material is not classified as hazardous, overexposure may

    5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

Although the material is not flammable, toxic fumes will be produced if
involved in a fire. The residue, ash or char left after a fire may have
catalytic properties and may promote the re-ignition of flammable materials
and vapours. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and personal
protective equipment. Use any extinguisher suitable for the surrounding
                                         fire.

    6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Wash to drain. Wash site of spillage with large amounts of water. Do not
allow spillage or wash water to enter natural watercourses.

    7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Local exhaust extraction should be used and protective clothing, including
         Handling (JM)
gloves and eye protection should be worn. Do not eat, drink, smoke or
                                         apply cosmetics whilst handling.
Store in an air-tight container in a cool, dry place.

                                         known.

    11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

The only data available for this material is the result of a Magnusson and
Kligman sensitisation test - positive, strong sensitiser.
Toxicological studies on similar compounds indicate that the LD50 (oral) is
expected to be >2000 mg/kg, and that this material is not expected to be a
                                         skin or eye irritant.
Persons with a history of allergic diseases, such as asthma or hay-fever,
should not work with platinum salts. A history of cardiac or pulmonary
disease may also preclude work with platinum salts - medical opinion should
be sought. Any workers experiencing untoward effects or symptoms
should be removed from exposure and medically examined for platinum
                                         sensitivity.
Sensitisation is indicated by positive skin-prick test to low concentration
                                         solutions of platinum salts.

    12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

The reproduction of daphnids is impaired (16%) by 0.014 ppm Pt in 3
weeks. Hydrogen hexachloroplatinate is reported to be lethal to certain
freshwater species. The complex may persist for some time in the
                                         environment.

    13. DISPOSAL

Return accumulated waste material to the refinery for metal recovery, or
dispose of in accordance with local and national regulations.
