    3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
This material is of moderate acute toxicity (LD50 oral rat 200 - 2000 mg/kg)
and is a severe eye irritant. It is not a skin sensitizer but users should note
that if ionic Platinum halogeno compounds are prepared from this material
                                          they will be highly allergenic.

Persons with a history of allergic diseases should not be exposed to Platinum
compounds. A history of cardiac or pulmonary diasease may preclude
exposure to Platinum compounds - medical opinion should be sought. Any
person experiencing untoward effects or symptoms whilst using Platinum
compounds should be removed from exposure and medically examined for

Although the material is not flammable, toxic fumes will be produced if
involved in a fire. The residue, ash or char left after a fire may have catalytic

    10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
This material is supplied in a stable form. Users should note that, when
subjected to a self ignition test"stainless steel basket" Method A16, this
material, in common with its Palladium analogue, gave an extreme exotherm
at 193掳C. This material has been the subject of a"Carius tube" test and no
evidence of a similar exotherm was reported. In fact, a moderate endotherm
was reported as would be expected for this type of reaction. It is the opinion
of Johnson Matthey that the exotherm reported in the A16 test was possibly
the result of an electrochemical reaction induced by the prescence of base
