APPEARANCE & ODOR
Clear colorless liquid. Strong chloroform-like characteristic odor.
REACTIVITY & CONDITIONS TO AVOID
Stable. Reacts violently with alkali metals. Incompatible with strong oxidizers, strong bases,
amines. Heating to decomposition may give fumes of phosgene. Should not be used in long term
contact with aluminum, zinc or their alloys.
FIRE HAZARDS
May decompose in fire to yield toxic gas (phosgene). Avoid inhalation of fumes.
Firefighters wear SCBA. NFPA #2-1-0.

HEALTH HAZARDS
Vapor is narcotic in high concentrations. Irritating to skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Toxic
orally or by inhalation with CNS effects. LD 50(oral-rat) 1600 mg/kg. LC 50(ihl-rat) 52,000 mg/m 3.
OSHA PEL TWA: 25 ppm; STEL 125 ppm. ACGIH TLV: TWA 50 ppm. Experimental carcinogenic and
tumorigenic data. ACGIH Group A3 - Confirmed animal carcinogen with unknown relevance to humans.
EPA: B2 - Probable human carcinogen - based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in
animals. Experimental teratogen and mutagen. Experimental reproductive effects. Warning: This
product contains a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Wear goggles and rubber gloves while handling. Use only with adequate ventilation or with
suitable respirator.
FIRST AID
Wash eyes thoroughly with water. If swallowed, give water or milk. Do NOT induce vomiting.
Inhalation - remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If breathing stops
administer respiration. Get medical attention in all cases.
SPILLS & LEAKS
Contain spill, ventilate area, take up spill in suitable absorbent. Disposal to chlorinated
hazardous waste.
