PHYSICAL DATA
Completely miscible with water; pH >13; Density 0.9.
APPEARANCE & ODOR
Clear colorless liquid. Sharp odor of ammonia.
REACTIVITY & CONDITIONS TO AVOID
Stable at normal ambient temperatures. Ammonia evaporates from opened containers. Reacts
violently with strong acids, liberating heat. Incompatible with many oxidizers, halogens, and
silver salts.
FIRE HAZARDS
Ammonia released when heated will burn in air under some conditions. Not considered fire hazard.
Firefighters wear SCBA. Fumes are suffocating and corrosive. NFPA# 3-1-0.

HEALTH HAZARDS
Liquid and vapor are both severe eye irritant. High hazard through inhalation. LC 50 (inhl-rat)
2000 ppm/4 hr; Eye-rabbit 44 ug severe; LD 50 (oral-rat) 350 mg/kg. Symptoms of over exposure -
irritation of eyes, nose and throat. Coughing, suffocation, collapse. OSHA PEL (NH 3): 50 ppm;
ACGIH TLV (NH 3): 25 ppm TWA; 35 ppm (STEL). Investigated as a tumorigen and mutagen. No evidence
of carcinogenicity.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Wear goggles and rubber gloves while handling. Use only with proper respirator or adequate
ventilation.
FIRST AID
Wash skin and eyes thoroughly with water. For eyes, get further medical treatment.
Inhalation-remove to fresh air, if breathing is difficult give oxygen, if breathing stops use
artificial respiration. Mouth to mouth may not be effective as the lungs must be cleared of air
before breathing will begin. Call a physician or emergency medical squad. If swallowed, give
water to drink, ice to suck. Call a physician. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious
person.
SPILLS & LEAKS
Clear area of personnel. Ventilate thoroughly and wash up spill with water. A small amount of
dilute acid may help clear the fumes.
