tert-BUTYL MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE, 1 M, in TETRAHYDROFURAN
CHEMICAL NAME & SYNONYMS DOT CLASS SARA TITLE 313
tert-BUTYL MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE, 1 M, 4.3/3/II No
in Tetrahydrofuran (THF) TSCA listed - No
FORMULA REPORTABLE QUANTITY F.W. CAS#
(CH 3) 3CMgCl 12% N/A 116.88 677-22-5
C 4H 8O 88% 454 kg 72.11 109-99-9
PHYSICAL DATA
Boiling point (THF) 65-67掳C; Vapor pressure (of THF) 114 mm at 15掳C; Vapor density 2.5.
APPEARANCE & ODOR
Clear liquid. Strong ethereal odor.
REACTIVITY & CONDITIONS TO AVOID
May form explosive peroxides on long standing after opening, especially when distilled or
evaporated (which concentrates the peroxides formed). Incompatible with oxidizing materials,
oxygen and water.
FIRE HAZARDS
Highly flammable. Reacts with water to form flammable gases. Avoid ignition sources.
Firefighters wear SCBA. NFPA # 3-3-3.
EXTINGUISHER FLASHPOINT LEL UEL
Dry chemical, CO 2 and foam. -17掳C 1.8% 11.8%
HEALTH HAZARDS
Irritating to skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Narcotic in high concentrations. Chronic exposure
may cause liver and kidney damage. Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
TC Lo (ihl-human) 25000 ppm (THF) CNS effects. LD 50 (oral-rat) 1650 mg (THF)/kg. LC 50 (inhal-rat)
21,000 ppm. OSHA PEL /ACGIH TLV: TWA 200 ppm; ACGIH STEL: 250 ppm. An NTP lifetime study on rats
and mice suggests that tetrahydrofuran may be a carcinogen in laboratory animals. There is no
data linking exposure to cancer in humans.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Wear goggles and suitable gloves while handling. Use only with adequate ventilation. Do not
store containers once they have been opened. Store in well ventilated area. Check regularly for
peroxides and before evaporating material to dryness. This material is not on the TSCA inventory
and so can be used only for R&D purposes.
FIRST AID
Wash skin and eyes thoroughly with water after contact. Inhalation remove to fresh air. If
breathing is difficult give oxygen, if breathing stops give artificial respiration. Get medical
assistance.
SPILLS & LEAKS
Ventilate area. Remove ignition sources. Equip responders with protective gear and take up spill
in suitable absorbent and incinerate.
