REACTIVITY & CONDITIONS TO AVOID
Stable. Incompatible with alkali metals. Reacts violently with acetone+alkali and similar
combinations. Reacts slowly on prolonged exposure to light and air forming hydrogen chloride.
FIRE HAZARDS
Evaporates readily. Not flammable but vapors are toxic. Avoid inhalation of vapor. Firefighters
wear SCBA. NFPA # 3-0-1.

Skin and eye irritant. Toxic by inhalation or orally. Formerly used as anesthetic; narcotic
effects. Harmful effects of chronic exposure - damage to liver, heart and kidneys. Carcinogenic
effects - animal positive, human suspected. LD 50 (oral-rat) 908 mg/kg. LD Lo (oral-human) 140
mg/kg. TC Lo (inhl-human) 10 mg/m 3/1Y. OSHA PEL: ceiling 50 ppm. ACGIH TLV: TWA 10 ppm. Systemic
effects. ACGIH group A3 animal carcinogen; NTP anticipated to be a human carcinogen; IARC group

of California to cause cancer.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Wear goggles and rubber gloves while handling. Use only with adequate ventilation or suitable
respirator. Store in tightly sealed containers protected from light in a well ventilated area.
FIRST AID
Wash skin or eyes thoroughly with water. If swallowed give water or milk and get immediate
medical attention. For inhalation, remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult give oxygen,
if breathing stops give artificial respiration. Get medical attention.
SPILLS & LEAKS
Ventilate area. Contain spill. Take up spill in absorbent, mix with caustic soda or lime and
incinerate. Avoid inhalation of vapors from spill. Environmental hazard.
