Section 3-Hazard Identification
Routes of Entry
Skin Contact Causes irritation to skin. Irritation may be severe.
Skin Absorption Causes irritation. Symptoms may include coughing or sneezing.
Eye Contact Causes irritation, redness, pain.
Inhalation Causes irritation to the respiratory tract. Can be absorbed through
inhalation with symptoms to parallel ingestion.
Ingestion Causes irritation to the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms may include
nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In severe cases, lithium can cause
apathy, sluggishness, drowsiness, slurred speech, blurred vision,
irregular eye movements, weakness, incoordination, lethargy, heart
effects, brain effects, ringing in the ears, tremors and muscle
twitching, central nervous system damage, kidney effects, thyroid
changes, coma, pulmonary edema, and renal failure.
[Emergency Overview]
WARNING! HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED OR INHALED. AFFECTS CENTRAL NERVOUS
SYSTEM, RESPIRATORY SYSTEM, MUSCLES AND KIDNEYS. CAUSES IRRITATION TO
SKIN, EYES AND RESPIRATORY TRACT. SKIN IRRITATION MAY BE SEVERE.
WHMIS Symbols
N.A.
[Potential Health Effects]
Human poison by ingestion. Experimental poison by intravenous and intracerebral routes. Moderately toxic by
subcutaneous and intraperitoneal routes. Experimental teratogenic and reproductive effects. Human systemic effects
by ingestion: somnolence, tremors, nausea or vomiting. An eye and severe skin irritant. Human mutation data
reported. Questionable carcinogen with experimental neoplastigenic data. This material has been recommended and
used as a substitute for sodium chloride in 鈥渟alt-free鈥? diets, but cases have been reported in which the ingestion of
lithium chloride has produced dizziness, ringing in the ears, visual disturbances, tremors, and mental confusion. In
most cases, the symptoms disappeared when use was discontinued. Prolonged absorption may cause disturbed
electrolyte balance, impaired renal function. Reaction is violent with BrF3. When heated to decomposition it emits
toxic fumes of Cl炉. Used for dehumidification in the air conditioning industry.
Section 4-First Aid Measures
Skin Contact Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing
contaminated clothing and shoes.
Eye Contact Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower
eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not
Breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Ingestion Induce vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth
to an unconscious person. Call a physician immediately.
Section 5-Fire Fighting Measures
Flammable Non flammable

Section 6-Accidental Release Measures
Leak and Spill Procedures
Ventilate area of leak or spill. Remove all sources of ignition. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as
specified in Section 8. Isolate hazard area. Keep unnecessary and unprotected personnel from entering. Contain and
recover liquid when possible. Collect liquid in an appropriate container or absorb with an inert material (e. g.,
vermiculite, dry sand, earth), and place in a chemical waste container. Do not use combustible materials, such as
sawdust. Do not flush to sewer!
Section 7-Handling and Storage
Handling Procedures and Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and
Equipment clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and
inhalation.
Storage Requirements Keep in a tightly closed container, stored in a cool, dry, ventilated area. Protect
against physical damage. Isolate from incompatible substances.

Engineering Controls (specific)
General Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash
facility and a safety shower. Use adequate ventilation to keep airborne
concentrations low.
Local Exhaust A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee
exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred
because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing
dispersion of it into the general work area. Please refer to the ACGIH document,
Industrial Ventilation, A Manual of Recommended Practices, most recent
edition, for details.
Other N.A.
Personal Protective Equipment (specific)
Gloves Wear impervious gloves.
Respirator A respiratory protection program that meets OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.134 and
ANSI Z88.2 requirements or European Standard EN 149 must be followed
whenever workplace conditions warrant a respirator's use.
Eye Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described
by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European
Standard EN166. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work
area.
Footwear Wear closed toe shoes.
Clothing Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure.
