Routes of Entry
Skin Contact Causes irritation to skin. Symptoms include redness, itching, and
pain.
Skin Absorption Boric Acid: Not significantly absorbed through the intact skin.
Readily absorbed through damaged or burned skin. Symptoms of skin
absorption parallel inhalation and ingestion.
Eye Contact Causes irritation, redness, and pain.
Inhalation Tris: Causes irritation to the respiratory tract. Symptoms may include
coughing, shortness of breath.

Boric Acid: Causes irritation to the mucous membranes of the
respiratory tract. May be absorbed from the mucous membranes, and
depending on the amount of exposure could result in the development
of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, rash, headache, fall in
body temperature, low blood pressure, renal injury, cyanosis, coma,
and death.
Ingestion Tris: Causes irritation and reddening to the mucous membranes of the
mouth, esophagus, and gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms may include
nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Large oral doses may cause weakness,
collapse, blood clotting and coma. Estimated lethal dose: 50 grams.

Boric Acid: Symptoms parallel absorption via inhalation. Adult fatal
dose reported at 5 to >30 grams.
[Emergency Overview]
WARNING! HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED OR INHALED. CAUSES IRRITATION TO SKIN, EYES AND
RESPIRATORY TRACT. AFFECTS CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM, LIVER AND KIDNEYS.
WHMIS Symbols

[Potential Health Effects]
Tris:
Moderately toxic by ingestion and intravenous routes. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes on Nox.

Boric Acid:
A human poison by ingestion and possibly other routes. Moderately toxic by skin contact and subcutaneous routes in
humans. Poison experimentally by inhalation and subcutaneous routes. Moderately toxic experimentally by
intraperitoneal and intravenous routes. Human systemic effects: anorexia, changes in kidney tubules, nausea or
vomiting, wakefulness. Ingestion or absorption by other routes may also cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps,
erythematous lesions on skin and mucous membranes, circulatory collapse, tachycardia, cyanosis, delirium,
convulsions, and coma. Death has occurred from ingestion of less than 5 g in infants, and from 5 to 20 g in adults.
Chronic exposure may result in borism (dry skin, eruptions, and gastrointestinal disturbances). Experimental
reproductive effects. Mutation data reported. A human skin irritant.
Section 4-First Aid Measures
Skin Contact Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing
contaminated clothing and shoes.

Material Safety Data Sheet
Eye Contact Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower
eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not
breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Ingestion Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious
and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Get medical aid if irritation or
symptoms occur.
Section 5-Fire Fighting Measures

Means of Extinction Water spray, dry chemical, alcohol foam, or carbon
dioxide.
Flashpoint (oC) and Method Not Tested

Boric Acid: Loses chemically combined water upon
heating, forming metaboric acid (HBO2) at 212-221F, then
pyroboric acid (H2B4O7) at 285-320F, and Boric
anhydride at higher temperatures.
NFPA Health: 2 Fire: 0 Stability: 1
Section 6-Accidental Release Measures
Leak and Spill Procedures
Ventilate area of leak or spill. Remove all sources of ignition. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as
specified in Section 8. Isolate hazard area. Keep unnecessary and unprotected personnel from entering. Contain and
recover liquid when possible. Collect liquid in an appropriate container or absorb with an inert material (e. g.,
vermiculite, dry sand, earth), and place in a chemical waste container. Do not use combustible materials, such as
sawdust. Do not flush to sewer!
Section 7-Handling and Storage
Handling Procedures and Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep
Equipment container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and inhalation.
Storage Requirements Keep in a tightly closed container, stored in a cool, dry, ventilated area. Protect
against physical damage. Isolate from incompatible substances.
Section 8-Exposure Control/Personal Protection
Exposure Limits
ACGIH TLV Not Listed
OSHA PEL Not Listed
Other (specify) N.A.
Engineering Controls (specific)
General Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash
facility and a safety shower. Use adequate ventilation to keep airborne
concentrations low.
Local Exhaust A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee
exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred
because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing
dispersion of it into the general work area. Please refer to the ACGIH document,
Industrial Ventilation, A Manual of Recommended Practices, most recent
edition, for details.
Other N.A.
Personal Protective Equipment (specific)
Gloves Wear impervious gloves.
Respirator A respiratory protection program that meets OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.134 and
ANSI Z88.2 requirements or European Standard EN 149 must be followed
whenever workplace conditions warrant a respirator's use.
