3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
IMMEDIATE CONCERNS:
Xylene is a colorless liquid with a strong hydrocarbon odor. It is volatile and extremely
flammable liquid that may cause flash fires. Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame.
Contains material that has caused cancer based on animal data. Never siphon this product by
mouth. If swallowed, this product may get sucked into the lungs (aspirated) and cause lung
damage or even death. Contact may cause eye and skin irritation.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES
EYES:
Immediately flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes while holding eyelids open. Seek

Xylene

medical attention immediately.

SKIN:
Immediately wash with soap and water. Rinse thoroughly. Seek medical attention if effects
occur. Launder contaminated clothing before reuse. Destroy contaminated shoes. If
symptoms or irritation occur, call a physician.

INGESTION:
Aspiration hazard - DO NOT induce vomiting. Take to hospital at once.

INHALATION:
Remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If not breathing or if no
heartbeat, give artificial respiration or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Immediately call
a physician.

COMMENTS:
Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to
protect themselves.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Flashpoint: 86-93掳F
Flammable Limits: 1.1% to 7.0%
Autoignition Temperature: 867掳F 464掳C

GENERAL HAZARD:
Vapors may travel along the ground and ignite when an ignition source is contacted.

EXTINGUISHING MEDIA:
Use alcohol foam, carbon dioxide, dry chemical or water spray when fighting fires involving
this material.

HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION PRODUCTS:
Oxides of carbon and harmful organic chemical fumes.

EXPLOSION HAZARDS:
Vapors may form explosive mixture with air.

FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES:
Use water fog to cool hot containers. Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned
hose holders or monitor nozzles.

FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT:
As in any fire, wear self-contained breathing apparatus pressure-demand, (MSHA/NIOSH
approved or equivalent) and full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes.

Shut off source, if safe to do so.
Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements, or confined areas.
Contain with dikes.
Use explosion proof equipment to recover.
Remove all sources of ignition.
Soak up residual on inert absorbent (dry sand, clay or earth).
Put in steel or plastic drum approved for flammables.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

GENERAL PROCEDURES:
Refer to Section 8.

STORAGE:
Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame.
Keep container closed when not in use.
Use with adequate ventilation.
Do not cut or weld on container.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

ENGINEERING CONTROLS:
Ventilation -General and local ventilation are required.

PERSONAL PROTECTION
EYES AND FACE:
Chemical goggles required and an eye wash in work area.

RESPIRATORY:
Use NIOSH approved respirator with organic vapor (color coded yellow) in non-ventilated area
and/or exposure above TLV. Use SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) in confined areas
and for emergencies.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING:
Face shield, boots, protective suit and impervious (polyvinyl alcohol and Viton) gloves.

OTHER USE PRECAUTIONS:
Safety shower and eye wash in the work area. Use mechanical ventilation equipment that is
