11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
ACUTE
Eyes: Corrosive. Rapidly causes pain, burns, corneal injury. May cause permanent damage and
blindness.
Skin: Toxic. Irritant. May cause pain, redness, dermatitis and can cause illness or death.
Ingestion: Irritant. May cause pain or discomfort to mouth, throat and stomach.
Inhalation: Irritant. May cause pain and coughing. Toxic at elevated temperatures.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
Formaldehyde is listed by OSHA, NTP, and IARC as having the potential to cause cancer in
humans. Repeated and prolonged exposure increases the risk. It is known to cause cancer in
rats.
COMMENTS:
Irritation to eyes and skin, systemic injury due to absorption. Rat study indicates overexposure
causes changes in liver and kidneys. May cause drunkenness. LD(50) = 2000 mg/kg in rats.
