PRODUCT USE
Used in the production of glazes for ceramic and electrical porcelain, as a catalyst in

luminescent paints and dyes, glass ceramics and in aluminium production. A B.P. grade is
used in medicine for the treatment of dementias.

Where Medical attention is not immediately available or where the patient is more than 15
minutes from a hospital or unless instructed otherwise:
路 Induce vomiting with fingers down the back of the of the throat, ONLY IF CONSCIOUS.
路 Lean patient forward or place on left side (head-down position if possible) to maintain
open airway and prevent aspiration.
NOTE: Wear a protective glove when inducing vomiting by mechanical means.
路 In the mean time, qualified first-aid personnel should treat the patient following
observation and employing supportive measures as indicated by the patient's condition.
路 If the services of a medical officer or medical doctor are readily available, the
patient should be placed in his/her care and a copy of the MSDS should be provided.
Further action will be the responsibility of the medical specialist.
路 If medical attention is not available on the worksite or surroundings send the patient
to a hospital together with a copy of the MSDS.

Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES

路 Immediately hold eyelids apart and flush the eye continuously with running water.
路 Ensure complete irrigation of the eye by keeping eyelids apart and away from eye and
moving the eyelids by occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids.
路 Continue flushing until advised to stop by the Poisons Information Centre or a doctor,
or for at least 15 minutes.
路 Transport to hospital or doctor without delay.
路 Removal of contact lenses after an eye injury should only be undertaken by skilled
personnel.

SKIN
If skin contact occurs:
路 Immediately remove all contaminated clothing, including footwear.
路 Flush skin and hair with running water (and soap if available).
路 Seek medical attention in event of irritation.

INHALED
路 If dust is inhaled, remove from contaminated area.
路 Encourage patient to blow nose to ensure clear passage of breathing.
路 If irritation or discomfort persists seek medical attention.

NOTES TO PHYSICIAN
Clinical effects of lithium intoxication appear to relate to duration of exposure as well
as to level.
路 Lithium produces a generalised slowing of the electroencephalogram; the anion gap may
increase in severe cases.
路 Emesis (or lavage if the patient is obtunded or convulsing) is indicated for ingestions
exceeding 40 mg (Li)/Kg.
路 Overdose may delay absorption; decontamination measures may be more effective several
hours after cathartics.
路 Charcoal is not useful. No clinical data are available to guide the administration of
catharsis.
路 Haemodialysis significantly increases lithium clearance; indications for haemodialysis
include patients with serum levels above 4 mEq/L
路 There are no antidotes.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

MINOR SPILLS
路 Clean up all spills immediately.

路 Contact lenses may pose a special hazard; soft contact lenses may absorb and
concentrate irritants. A written policy document, describing the wearing of lens or
restrictions on use, should be created for each workplace or task. This should include a
review of lens absorption and adsorption for the class of chemicals in use and an account
of injury experience. Medical and first-aid personnel should be trained in their removal
and suitable equipment should be readily available. In the event of chemical exposure,
begin eye irrigation immediately and remove contact lens as soon as practicable. Lens
should be removed at the first signs of eye redness or irritation - lens should be
removed in a clean environment only after workers have washed hands thoroughly. [CDC

路 Exhaust ventilation should be designed to prevent accumulation and recirculation of
particulates in the workplace.
路 If in spite of local exhaust an adverse concentration of the substance in air could
occur, respiratory protection should be considered. Such protection might consist of:
(a): particle dust respirators, if necessary, combined with an absorption cartridge;
(b): filter respirators with absorption cartridge or canister of the right type;
(c): fresh-air hoods or masks
路 Build-up of electrostatic charge on the dust particle, may be prevented by bonding and
grounding.
路 Powder handling equipment such as dust collectors, dryers and mills may require
additional protection measures such as explosion venting.

Air contaminants generated in the workplace possess varying "escape" velocities which, in
turn, determine the "capture velocities" of fresh circulating air required to efficiently
remove the contaminant.

Simple theory shows that air velocity falls rapidly with distance away from the opening
of a simple extraction pipe. Velocity generally decreases with the square of distance
from the extraction point (in simple cases). Therefore the air speed at the extraction
point should be adjusted, accordingly, after reference to distance from the contaminating
source. The air velocity at the extraction fan, for example, should be a minimum of 4-10
m/s (800-2000 f/min) for extraction of crusher dusts generated 2 metres distant from the
extraction point. Other mechanical considerations, producing performance deficits within
the extraction apparatus, make it essential that theoretical air velocities are
multiplied by factors of 10 or more when extraction systems are installed or used.

ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS

SWALLOWED
The material is moderately discomforting to the gastro-intestinal tract and may be
harmful if swallowed.
Lithium, in large doses, can cause dizziness and weakness. If a low salt diet is in place
, kidney damage can result. There may be dehydration, weight loss, skin effects and
thyroid disturbances. Central nervous system effects include slurred speech, blurred
vision, numbness, inco-ordination and convulsions. Repeated exposure can cause diarrhoea,
vomiting, tremor, muscle jerks and very brisk reflexes.

EYE
The material is highly discomforting to the eyes and is capable of causing a mild,
temporary redness of the conjunctiva (similar to wind-burn), temporary impairment of
vision and/ or other transient eye damage/ ulceration.

SKIN
The solid/dust is. discomforting to the skin and is capable of causing skin reactions
which may lead to dermatitis.
Open cuts, abraded or irritated skin should not be exposed to this material. Toxic
effects may result from skin absorption.

INHALED
The dust may be highly discomforting to the upper respiratory tract and may be harmful if
inhaled.
Persons with impaired respiratory function, airway diseases and conditions such as
emphysema or chronic bronchitis, may incur further disability if excessive concentrations
of particulate are inhaled.
