Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES


SWALLOWED
鈥? Immediately give a glass of water.
鈥? First aid is not generally required. If in doubt, contact a Poisons
Information Centre or a doctor.

EYE
If this product comes in contact with the eyes:
鈥? Wash out immediately with fresh running water.
鈥? Ensure complete irrigation of the eye by keeping eyelids apart and away from
eye and moving the eyelids by occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids.
鈥? If pain persists or recurs seek medical attention.
鈥? Removal of contact lenses after an eye injury should only be undertaken by
skilled personnel.

SKIN
If skin or hair contact occurs:
鈥? Flush skin and hair with running water (and soap if available).
鈥? Seek medical attention in event of irritation.

INHALED
鈥? If fumes or combustion products are inhaled remove from contaminated area.
鈥? Lay patient down. Keep warm and rested.
鈥? Prostheses such as false teeth, which may block airway, should be removed,
where possible, prior to initiating first aid procedures.
鈥? Apply artificial respiration if not breathing, preferably with a demand valve
resuscitator, bag-valve mask device, or pocket mask as trained. Perform CPR if
necessary.
鈥? Transport to hospital, or doctor.

NOTES TO PHYSICIAN
Magnesium is present in the blood, as a normal constituent, at concentrations
between 1.6 to 2.2 meq/l. Some 30% is plasma bound. At serum magnesium levels of
3-4 mEq/l, signs of CNS depression, loss of reflexes, muscular tone and power,
and bradycardia occur. Cardiac arrest (sometimes fatal) and/or respiratory
paralysis can occur at plasma levels of 10-15 meq/l. For acute or short term
repeated exposures to magnesium;
鈥? Symptomatic hypermagnesaemia appears rarely in the absence of intestinal or
renal disease.
鈥? Elevated magnesium levels may cause hypocalcaemia because of decreased

parathyroid hormone activity and decreased end-organ responsiveness.
鈥? Patients with severe hypermagnesemia may develop sudden respiratory arrest and
must be watched closely for apnoea.
鈥? Use fluids, then vasopressors for hypotension. Frequently hypotension responds
to calcium administration.
鈥? Induce emesis or administer lavage if patient presents within 4 hours of
ingestion. Use sodium cathartics, with caution, in presence of cardiac or renal
failure.
鈥? Activated charcoal is not useful.
鈥? Calcium is an antagonist of magnesium action and is an effective antidote when
serum levels exceed 5MEg/L and the patient exhibits symptoms The adult dose of
calcium gluconate is 10 ml of a 10% solution over several minutes. [Ellenhorn

ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS

SWALLOWED
The material is moderately discomforting to the gastro-intestinal tract and may
be harmful if swallowed in large quantity.
Small amounts or low dose rates are regarded as practically non-harmful.
Sulfates are not well absorbed orally, but can cause diarrhoea.
Magnesium salts are generally absorbed so slowly that oral administration causes
few toxic effects, as the dose is readily expelled via the bowel. If evacuation
fails, mucosal irritation and absorption may result. This can result in nervous
system depression, heart effects, loss of reflexes and death due to paralysis of
breathing. These usually do not occur unless the bowel or kidneys are damaged.

EYE
The dust may produce eye discomfort and abrasive eye inflammation.

SKIN
The material may be slightly discomforting to the skin if exposure is prolonged.

INHALED
The dust may be discomforting to the upper respiratory tract.
Persons with impaired respiratory function, airway diseases and conditions such
as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, may incur further disability if excessive
concentrations of particulate are inhaled.

CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS
Principal routes of exposure are by accidental skin and eye contact and
inhalation of generated dusts.
