HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Health Effects

Acute - Ingestion Toxic if swallowed. Anticholinesterase effects. Ingestion can result in nausea and vomiting followed
by headaches, dizziness, weakness, and exhaustion. Severe cases of poisoning may result in
wheezing, tightness of the chest, abdominal pain with diarrhoea and vomiting, blurred vision,
muscular twitching and slurred speech.
Acute - Eye A moderate eye irritant. Can cause contraction of the pupils leading to blurred vision.
Acute - Skin Can be absorbed through the skin with resultant toxic effects. (See under 'Swallowed' below). Will
have a degreasing effect and repeated or prolonged contact may lead to defatting and dermatitis.
Acute - Inhalation Can be absorbed through respiratory tract with resultant toxic effects as described under
'Swallowed'. Vapour is irritant to mucous membranes and respiratory tract. Inhalation of vapour can
result in headaches, dizziness, and possible nausea. High concentrations can produce central
nervous system depression, which can lead to loss of co-ordination, impaired judgement and
unconsciousness.
Chronic Repeated minor exposure may have a cumulative poisoning effect by lowering the blood
cholinesterase level to the point where acute poisoning develop. May result in liver, kidney, and
central nervous system disorders.

First Aid

Ingestion Thoroughly rinse mouth with water. If poisoning occurs contact a doctor or Poisons Information
Centre (Phone 113126). Do not make an unconscious person vomit. If vomiting occurs, place
victim face downward, head lower than hips, to prevent aspiration of material into the lungs.
Eye Irrigate with copious quantities of water for 15 minutes. Eyelids to be held open. Seek immediate
medical attention.
Skin Remove ALL contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. If swelling,
redness, blistering or irritation occurs, seek medical advice.
Remove victim from further exposure. Remove contaminated clothing and loosen remaining
Inhalation
clothing. Allow patient to assume most comfortable position and keep warm. Keep at rest until fully
recovered. If breathing has stopped, apply artificial respiration at once. If breathing laboured and
patient cyanotic (blue), ensure airways are clear and have a qualified person give oxygen through a
face mask. Seek medical advice.
Other Information A first aid kit should be readily available, with eye bath.

Advice to Doctor

Advice to Doctor TREATMENT: Show this MSDS to the Doctor. Anticholinesterase effects: Give 2 mg of atropine
sulphate intramuscularly, or in severe cases, intravenously, repeated at 10-15 minute intervals until
dryness of the mouth occurs. When this response is achieved, it is advisable to maintain a mild
degree of atropinisation for 24 hours. Atropine should NOT be given to a cyanosed patient. A
person who has suffered organophosphate poisoning should be kept under medical supervision,
preferably in hospital, for 24 - 48 hours until likelihood of relapse is past.

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

Exposure Limits Name STEL TWA
mg/m3 ppm mg/m3 ppm TWA Footnote
Diazinon 0.1
Other Exposure Info. Threshold Limit Value (TLV): None assigned for the product. Diazinon: 0.1 mg/m3 'skin'. TWA
Aromatic Hydrocarbon: 100 ppm TWA (Recommended by manufacturer) As published by the
National Health and Safety Commission (Worksafe Australia) Exposure standard means an airborne
concentration of a particular substance in the worker's breathing zone, exposure to which, according
to current knowledge, should not cause adverse health effects undue discomfort to nearly all
workers. The exposure standard can be of three forms; time-weighted average (TWA), peak
limitation, or short term exposure limit (STEL). A 'skin' notation indicates that this substance will be
absorbed through the skin, either by contact with the airborne material or the liquid. The TLV is
obviously invalidated if such contact occurs.
Engineering Controls Natural ventilation should be adequate under normal use conditions.

Personal Protection

Avoid skin and eye contact. Wear protective clothing, rubber boots, hat, impervious gloves and
Protective Equipment
goggles. Avoid inhalation of mists and aerosols. Always wash hands before smoking, eating,
drinking, or using the toilet.

Flammability

Fire Hazards Combustible. Isolate from all sources of heat, naked flames or sparks. See Safe Handling
Information- Fire/Explosion Hazard. Beware of vapours.
