HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
HEALTH EFFECTS
Swallowed: Iron dextran is non-toxic in therapeutic doses. If swallowed in doses higher than 60 mg
Fe/kg body weight the liberated iron ions will be toxic and dangerous to the health.
Symptoms: Nausea/vomiting and stomach pains 鈫? acidosis鈫? multiple organ damages.

Eye: Avoid contact with eyes. Will irritate.
Skin: Avoid spills on the skin, as 0.5% phenol in the solution can cause irritation on the skin and
mucous membranes.
Inhaled: If inhaled, the toxic limit for phenol in breathing air is 19 mg/m3.
FIRST AID
Swallowed: The patient should be transferred into hospital for emptying of stomach - and treatment
with antidote: Desferal (Ciba Geigy).
Eye: Flush out with gentle stream of clean water. Seek medical advice if soreness persists.
Skin: Wash well with water.
Inhalation: Seek medical treatment.


PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
Exposure Limits: 19 mg/m3 when heated. Use only as directed.
Ventilation: No special ventilation is recommended under normal conditions of use. No special
respiratory protection equipment is recommended under anticipated conditions of normal use.
Personal Protection: Avoid eye and skin contact. Wear eye protection (face visor or goggles) if
accidental eye contact can occur. Wear PVC gloves if skin contact is likely to occur. Observe good
personal hygiene.
Flammability: Non flammable. Avoid heat and sources of ignition.


SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION


Storage and Transport: Store in cool dry place 2-15潞 C. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of
children. Containers should always be kept closed in storage and properly labelled. Store only in
original containers.
Spills and Disposal: For major spills dam and recover. Prevent entry into drainage systems, rivers,
etc. Collect with absorbent material such as sand, earth or sawdust. Advise local authorities. Treat
spill area with plenty of water. The iron dextran does not damage the microbial activity in the
treatment plant.
Fire/Explosion Hazard: Non flammable. Use dry powder, foam, carbon dioxide (CO2) or water spray
as extinguishing agent.
