The Integrated Index feature allows searching across multiple databases
simultaneously, saving time and optimizing search results.




To search for information across multiple databases using the Integrated Index feature:


1. Type in the desired search term(s) in the Enter search term(s) box.


NOTE: When using multiple search terms - use only a space between the terms.
Do not use any Boolean operators (e.g. AND, &, OR, etc).



2. Click the Search button or press Enter on your keyboard.

3. The Search Results page appears.
Matches to the search terms are shown at the top of the page.
Links to documents are organized by topic: Summary Documents, Drug Information
(includes links to trade name products), Toxicology Information (includes links to
products), Acute Care and Emergency Medicine, Complementary and Alternative
Medicine, and Reproductive Risk.

5. View the document.
Navigate to other areas within the Healthcare Series using buttons described below:

Access the online help. Goes directly to the Table of Contents for all topics in
the online User's Guide.

Goes to the Main (a.k.a. Home) Healthcare Series page. Generally, this is the
Integrated Index Search page.

Perform a new term search. You may also start a new search from the box at
the bottom of the Search Results page.

Return to the list of Search Results for the term(s) searched. This allows you
to select a document from a different database.

This button appears when viewing documents organized by an outline. Takes
you to the top-level outline of the document to allow you to select a different
outline section.

To print the document, select the Print Ready button when available. Follow
Print Rdy the prompts for full or partial print request.

If products are associated with the document, this button will appear. Select
Prd Idx
this button to view the product list.

To go to the next page in the document, use the
Scroll bar or Page Down key.


6. Print the document if desired.

Select the Print Ready button (if available)
and follow the prompts.

You have the option of printing the entire
document, or only selected sections.
You can choose to view (display) the entire
document, or only selected sections.

Pages without the Print Ready button can be
printed via the File Print menu bar option or
the Print toolbar button.

Using the Search by Database Option
The Search by Database option allows you to narrow the search and search results to
one or more databases within the Healthcare Series.




To search for information using the Search by Database option:


1. From the Main (Home) page, select the Search by database link.
2. Type the desired search term(s) in the Enter search term(s) box.


NOTE: When using multiple search terms - use only a space between the terms.
Do not use any Boolean operators (e.g. AND, &, OR, etc).

3. Select the databases that contain the desired information by clicking on the box located
to the left of the database name. One or more databases may be selected.

The example above illustrates a search of the DRUGDEX®, Summary Documents, and
®
POISINDEX Systems for information on the drug digoxin.

For a description of each of the Healthcare Series databases, select the 'see database
®,
descriptions' link found on each of the search pages (Integrated Index Search by
database, and Search by category).
4. Click the Search button or press Enter on your keyboard.

Using the Search by Category Option
Use the Search by category feature to focus your search on specific types of
information from a specific area or topic




To search for information using the Search by Category option:


1. On the main screen, select the Search by category link.
2. Type in the desired search term(s) in the Enter search term(s) box.


NOTE: When using multiple search terms - use only a space between the terms.
Do not use any Boolean operators (e.g. AND, &, OR, etc).

3. Select the categories for which you wish to view results by moving the cursor and
clicking on the box to the left of the category. One or more categories may be selected.

The example above shows a search for teratogenicity information on the drug
phenergan.

4. Click the Search button or press Enter on your keyboard.

Toxicology
This portion of the database links directly to toxicology information,
allowing rapid information retrieval in the case of a toxic exposure or
a need to identify a pill or substance. The Product Reference
Number Lookup feature provides direct access to AAPCC (American
Association of Poison Control Centers) numbers and product
reference codes for use by Poison Control Centers.




To use the Toxicology database:

1. Select the Toxicology link under the Find drugs and substances icon on the main
screen. The toxicology section contains both the POISINDEX® and IDENTIDEX®
Systems.

2. Select the database you wish to search by clicking the button to the left of either the
POISINDEX or IDENTIDEX option.

� The POISINDEX System is used to identify potentially toxic substances in
pharmaceuticals, household items, industrial, manufacturing, and biological agents.

� The IDENTIDEX System is used to identify solid dosage forms by their imprint code.

3. Type the desired search term in the Enter Search Term box and click Search.

4. Search results appear. Based on the search term(s) entered in the previous step, the
list is positioned to the closest possible match. Even if no exact match is found, you will
be presented with a list most closely matching your search term(s). Select the link to
the product you wish to view.




5. Information about the product appears.

Toxicology

The Find feature:

There are two different ways of finding specific sections within a toxicologic management. Click
the hypertext links of the document outline until the appropriate section is reached, or use the
Find feature. The Find feature locates a search string parameter in the current document
section.




Utilizing the Find feature:

1. Search for, and open a document.

2. Select Edit Find from the menu bar, or press the F5 key.

3. Type the desired search parameter in the Locate box.

4. The first occurrence of the search term will be highlighted on the screen. To view the
next occurrence of the search term, select Edit Find Next, or press Ctrl+F.

Note: Intranet customers may use the ‘Find� feature contained in their web browser

Toxicology

Document History:

The MICROMEDEX® Healthcare Series for Windows® web browser interface maintains a
history of previously viewed documents. The history list will retain up to the last ten documents
viewed.


Utilizing the Document History List:
There are two ways to access the Document History in the Healthcare Series:

� Select View Document History Bar to open the drop-down list box in your browser.

To select a previous document, click the down arrow and scroll to the document desired.
Select it by clicking on the document.




OR

� Select History from the menu bar.
� Switch to a previous document by selecting the item with your arrow keys from the pull-
down menu.

Trade/Generic Drugs

Information about trade and generic drug names,
manufacturer data, product availability, and dosage
®
forms may be found in the DRUGDEX and
MARTINDALE product indexes.




To find information on Trade and Generic Drugs:


1. Select the Trade/Generic Drugs link under the Find drugs and substances icon on the
main screen. This section contains the product indexes for both the DRUGDEX® and
MARTINDALE Systems.

2. Select the database you wish to search by clicking the button to the left of either the
DRUGDEX or MARTINDALE Product Index.

3. Type a drug name in the Enter Search Term box and click Submit Query.


NOTE: You may either enter the brand or generic name of a drug.



4. The product list of matches to your search term is displayed. Select the link to the
product you wish to view.

5. For further information about the drug, click the link to the DRUGDEX® Drug Evaluation
or the MARTINDALE monograph that appears within the product listing.

Drug Interactions

The Drug Interaction tool allows you to simultaneously calculate
drug-drug, drug-food, drug-ethanol, drug-tobacco, and drug-
disease interactions by entering a patient's drug profile in the
®
DRUG-REAX System.




To calculate drug interactions:
1. Select the Drug Interactions link under the Use a tool icon on the main screen.

2. Type in a name of a drug in the Add Drug to Patient Profile box.

3. Click on the button that indicates if the drug entered is to be added to the drug profile or
listed as a patient allergen.

NOTE: The system defaults to adding the drug to the profile so it is not
necessary to continue to select this button to add each drug to the profile.


4. Click the Search button or press Enter on
the keyboard.

5. A list of drugs matching the search term is
returned. Select the route and form the
patient is taking. Because excipients may
differ from one formulation to another, it is
important to select the correct dosage form.

6. Continue to build the patient profile by
entering all drugs and previous allergens in
the same manner.

and limit interactions that are displayed to those of differing severity or

8. All of the calculated drug interactions will appear. To view additional information about
the interaction, click the link that appears with the name of the drugs.

Dosing Tools:
Emergency Drug Dosing Calculators
Included in this section are Emergency Drug Dosing Calculators
(based on Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric
Advanced Life Support guidelines) and Nomograms for:
Acetaminophen, Salicylate, and Ibuprofen Toxicity. Diagnostic
and Therapeutic Pearls can also be found in the Dosing Tools
area, and provide useful information and charts often used in clinical practice.




To use the Adult and Pediatric Emergency Drug Dosing Calculators:
1. Select the Dosing Tools link under the Use a tool icon on the main screen.

2. Select the link to Adult and Pediatric Emergency Drug Dosing Calculators
(ACLS/PALS Guidelines).

3. Click the button to indicate whether the calculations are for a pediatric or adult patient.

4. Enter the patient's name or identification number in the Name/ID Number box.

5. Enter the patient's weight in the Patient Weight box.

NOTE: The system automatically defaults to weight in kilograms. If you wish to
enter the weight in pounds, click the LBS button to the right of the box.
The calculator converts the weight in pounds to kilograms and performs
the calculations.

6. Click the Calculate button or press Enter on your keyboard.

7. The drugs used in an emergency setting with the appropriate dosages for the entered
patient weight are presented. View the results by using the Scroll bar or the Page Down
key, or print the entire report (via the Print Ready button) to place in the patient's chart
or bedside.

Dosing Tools:
Toxicity Nomograms

To use a Toxicity Nomogram:
1. Click the Dosing tools link.

2. Select the Toxicity Nomograms link.

3. Click the button to the left of the monograph
you wish to use.

4. Select the units of measurement for the
blood plasma level.

5. Enter the blood plasma level value and the
hours since ingestion.

6. Select if the nomogram is to be displayed as
a graph or table.

7. Click the Show Nomogram button.

Dosing Tools:
Dosing Calculators
Dosing calculators provide answers to a wide range of questions to assist clinicians in making
drug calculations and decisions for treating specific patient conditions. A print option provides
the opportunity to add the printout to the patient chart.

Dobutamine, epinephrine, heparin, dopamine, and creatinine clearance, are just a few of the
calculators available from MICROMEDEX.

To use the Dosing Calculators:
1. Click the Dosing tools link located under the
Use a tool icon on the main screen.
2. Using the scrollbar, scroll down to the Dosing
Calculators section
3. Select a calculator by clicking the calculator
name
4. Fill out the necessary fields and press Submit
to begin the calculation

(Creatinine Clearance is used for this example)

� Patient Name (optional)
� Lean/Ideal Body Weight (required). Select
kg or lb. Note: If weight in pounds is
selected, the calculation converts the weight
to kilograms and calculates based on kg.
� Age (required). Select months to calculate
infants under one year of age.
� Sex: M or F (required)
� Serum Creatinine (required)
� Initial therapy - select one

When all desired fields have been completed,
press the Submit button.


Press the Main button to return to the home
page of the Healthcare Series.

Press the New Patient button to perform a
calculation for another patient

Select the Print toolbar button (or File/Print
menu item) to print the calculator results.

IV Compatibility
The IV INDEX® System provides instant answers to help make
accurate, confident, intravenous (IV) compatibility decisions. The
System includes information from Trissel's Tables. and the IV
Admixture module from Gold Standard Multimedia. The System
provides information on Y-site compatibility and solution stability.




To determine Intravenous Compatibility:


1. Select the IV Compatibility link under the Use a tool icon on the main screen.
2. Enter the drug name or IV solution in the Enter Generic Drug Name field.
3. Click the Add to Profile button or press Enter on your keyboard.
4. Select the desired drug from the search results list.
5. Continue to add drugs to the profile in this same manner until the profile is complete.




Click Clear IV Drug

The CareNotesâ„? System - featuring SaveNotes offers
patient education leaflets on disease and treatment
information, as well as over-the-counter and commonly
prescribed drugs.

CareNotes documents assist healthcare professionals in educating patients about their
immediate condition, treatment, follow-up care, and continuing health concerns.
DrugNotes documents include information in layman's terms on how to take and store the
medication, drugs and foods to avoid, warnings and side effects.
SaveNotes are documents that have been customized by personnel at your facility to reflect
your treatments, procedures, and protocols.

To search for patient education documents:

1. Select the CareNotesâ„? System link under the Access patient education icon on the
main screen.

NOTE: If you subscribe to AfterCare® Instructions, or Drug Leaflets, you will not
see the CareNotesâ„? System link beneath the patient education icon.


2. If SaveNotes have been activated at your facility, you will see the Change/Set Unit link
just above the Enter Search Term box. If a Unit was set previously, you will also see a
Facility and Unit. If this Faciltiy/Unit combination is not representative of your Unit,
change it by selecting the Change/Set Unit link and following the prompts.

3. Search by keyword: Enter the search term(s) and click the Search button.

Contained in AltMed Leaflets is concise information for the
patient on herbal, vitamin, mineral, and dietary
supplements. AltMed Leaflets also provides overviews on common CAM therapies and
information on treatment of common health conditions using complementary and
alternative methods.




To search for alternative medicine patient education documents:

1. Select the AltMed Leaflets link under the Access patient education icon on the main
screen.
2. Search by keyword: Enter the search term(s) and click the Submit Query button.

3. The Search Results lists all documents with matches to your search term(s). Open the
document by clicking the link.
