APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
The “MILCO / TrusJoist ® Adjust-a-Trak Penetration-free Forming System for reducing surface penetrations
involves the use of a specific product MILCO Spray Adhesive combined with a specific application
method and the utilization of complementary and compatible Weyerhaeuser / TrusJoist® construction products
in concert with appropriate end-user training to assure optimum results in a wide variety of climatic conditions.

For optimum dependability, MILCO recommends that its Spray Adhesive product be applied only in conjunction
w ith compatible MILCO-tested and approved third-party-manufactured products, including adhesive applicators,
TrusJoist ® forming materials and 3M surface cleaners. A list of compatible MILCO-tested and approved bond-
breaker products may be found at the MILCO Website at “http://w w w .milco-tilt-up.com in the “MILCO Product
Information section.

STEP 1 APPLY ADHESIVE DIRECTLY T O CASTING BED SURFACE (PRIOR TO APPLICATION OF BOND-
BREAKER / RELEASING AGENT):

MILCO Spray Adhesive should be applied directly to the casting bed surface in accordance with these
Instructions.

IMPORTANT

If the casting bed surface has been cleaned with 3Mâ„? Adhesive Remover Citrus
Base prior to application of MILCO Spray Adhesive, allow at least 2 hours before
applying ADHESIVE to allow the Adhesive Remover solvents to flash off.

STEP 2 - SURFACE CONDITIONS / APPLICATION TEMPERATURE / DRYING TIMES:

For best results, all surfaces to be bonded should be dry and free from dust, oil, grease, loose paint, etc.

DO NOT APPLY THIS PRODUCT OVER “FIBERMESH OR SIMILAR SURFACES.

DO NOT APPLY THIS PRODUCT OVER SURFACES COVERED W IT H STANDING WATER OR DURING
MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINFALL. Product MAY be applied to wet or damp surfaces by following the “w et
surface application instructions set forth below in Step 5(A)(I).

IMPORTANT:

For at least 24 hours prior to adhesive application, and during the application
process, MILCO SPRAY ADHESIVE PRODUCT MUST BE MAINTAINED IN ITS
CYLINDER at 60ÂşF (16.50ÂşC) or above, and the surface(s) to be bonded should
be at 33ÂşF (1.00ÂşC) or above. Product may fail to bond if temperature of cylinder
contents falls below recommended temperature or if product is applied to
surfaces that are below minimum temperature recommendations.

LET IT DRY! LET IT DRY! LET IT DRY! Average w arm-weather drying time is 1-7 minutes for the adhesive
to cure to the point w here it is not “sticky or pliable when touched and considerably longer in cooler (under
60 " ) weather. Double coats require double time! Working time is around 45 minutes so don’t be in a rush!

STEP 3 - LOCATE / PRE-CUT / PRE-FIT / APPLY LACQUER TO “MDF STRIPS: Locate and mark all edge form
and/or strip locations on the concrete slab surface in accordance w ith the plans and specifications and material
w idth. Pre-cut all forms and strips to desired length. Pre-fit all items before applying adhesive.

MILCO / TrusJoist® Forming System Page 3 of 9 PRECAST INSTRUCTION SHEET
INSTRUCTIONS FOR “MDF INSTALLATION:

! APPLY LACQUER TO ALL SIDES OF ANY “MDF OR SIMILAR MOISTURE-
ABSORBING MATERIAL PRIOR TO APPLYING ADHESIVE

! APPLY AN EXTRA COAT OF ADHESIVE OVER THE LAST FOOT AT EACH END
DURING INSTALLATION.

! LEAVE ADEQUATE EXPANSION GAPS BETWEEN ENDS. IF RAINING, APPLY
LACQUER TO STRIPS IN A PROTECTED AREA.

! NOTE: TrusJoist® “Premium MDF, metal, solid wood, or plastic / Styrofoam
forms or strips do NOT require pre-lacquering.

STEP 4 - SPRAY GUN SETUP: To assure proper application results in accordance with these Instructions,
MILCO requires the use of SHOPWARE, INC. Spray Applicator Kit, Part No. MSK-20 which includes an applicator
w ith a built-in 18" nozzle extension. Hoses are available in 20' or 10' lengths. Contact your distributor for more
information.

Remove the protective cap from the cylinder valve and save it for transporting or returning the cylinder to
MILCO after use. (Alw ays restore the protective cap before returning the cylinder to MILCO.) Attach the smaller
flare fitting end of hose to the cylinder valve and the 114 N.S. (larger) fitting-end of hose to the spray adhesive
applicator. FULLY TIGHTEN ALL CO N N EC T IONS. INSPECT ALL CONNECTIONS FOR LEAKS. Open the
cylinder valve fully, then close ¼ to ½ turn. Set the "trigger stop adjusting nut" for desired adhesive flow.

Set the Shopw are applicator’s "trigger stop adjusting nut" for desired adhesive flow . Typically, one-and-a-half
turns from the “closed position w ill be about where the best setting should be. The spray pattern should be
adjusted to 2 to 3 inches in width at the recommended application distance of betw een 2.5" to 3.5" from the
target surface. Test spray a stream of adhesive through the nozzle to assure that there is NO SPUTTERING and
that the adhesive sprays in a SPIDER-WEB OR THREAD-LIKE PATTERN.

IMPORTANT:

! USE ONLY THE 95-DEGREE (ORANGE) SPRAY TIP, Part No. TP9501EVS-SW,
FOR APPLYING MILCO TILT-UP SPRAY ADHESIVE.

! ADJUSTMENT OF THE APPLICATO R T R IGGER STOP NUT AFFECTS SPRAY
PATTERN WID T H AND AMOUNT OF SPRAY THAT IS APPLIED TO THE TARGET
SURFACES. LOOK FOR A SPIDER-WEB / THREAD-LIKE PATTERN.

! CAREFULLY CHECK ALL FITTINGS FROM THE CYLINDER TO THE TIP OF THE
ADHESIVE APPLIC ATOR EXTENSION TO ASSURE THAT THEY ARE TIGHT AND
THAT THERE ARE NO LEAKS.

! FREQUENTLY CHECK SPRAY TIP FOR ADHESIVE BUILD-UP, ESPECIALLY
DURING WINDY CONDITIONS. PERIODICALLY CLEAN NOZZLE TIP WITH 3Mâ„?
ADHESIVE REMOVER CITRUS BASE AND A WIRE BRUSH.

! TAKE CARE NOT TO APPLY THE ADHESIVE TOO THICKLY. “BUBBLING OF
ADHESIVE MATERIAL AND ADHESION FAILURE MAY RESULT.

! DON’T FORGET THIS IS A CONTACT AD HESIVE! APPLY ADHESIVE TO
BOTH SURFACES!

SEE SHOPWARE, INC. INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR SPRAY TIP INSTALLATION, SPRAY ORIENTATION
ADJUSTMENT, AND OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

MILCO / TrusJoist® Forming System Page 4 of 9 PRECAST INSTRUCTION SHEET
STEP 5 - ADHESIVE APPLICATION ON WET OR DRY SURFACES:

A. BLOCKOUTS, CHAMFERS, REVEAL STRIPS, DETAIL STR IPS, FEATURE STRIPS, RUSTICATION STRIPS
and MDF STRIPS:

(I) Casting Bed Surface: Holding the spray nozzle 2.5 to 3.5 inches aw ay from the target surface, spray ON E
(1) even coat of adhesive over the marked-off target area on the CASTING BED.

If standing w ater is present on slab surface at time of application, remove all pooled w ater with a “squeegee
or blow er. DO NOT “SQUEEGEE A WET SURFACE TO WHICH ADH ESIVE HAS ALREADY BEEN APPLIED.
Application of adhesive during moderate to heavy rainfall is not recommended.

(ii) Strips:

For REVEAL, RUSTICATION, CHAMFER STRIPS, etc. WIDER than O N E IN C H : Apply ONE even coat of
adhesive to the concrete slab surface and ONE even coat to the strip material. IMPORTANT DO NOT APPLY
ADHESIVE TOO THICKLY!

For REVEAL, RUSTICATION, CHAMFER STRIPS, etc. ONE INCH or LESS in width: Apply ONE even coat of
adhesive to the CONCRETE SLAB surface and DOUBLE COAT the ST R IP w ith tw o THIN COATS of adhesive.

If its raining, apply adhesive to forms, strips or blocks in a protected area.

(iii) LET IT DRY! LET IT DRY! LET IT DRY! Allow the adhesive-coated surfaces to become dry to touch. When
dry, the adhesive should not be “sticky to touch or capable of transfer. Drying time w ill vary depending upon
relative humidity, temperature and moisture levels. (Refer to Step 2 above.) DO NOT FORCE DRY THE
ADHESIVE AFTER IT IS APPLIED as its contact properties may be adversely affected.

(iv) Carefully align the form or strip over the appropriate casting bed target area and join the surfaces together.
CAUTION! BONDING IS INSTANT. After the adhesive-coated surfaces have properly dried, bonding w ill occur
on contact on a dry or damp surface. Following surface contact in accordance with these instructions - in either
a “dry or “wet environment - the bond will generally not be impaired or defeated by subsequent moisture,
humidity or standing water that occurs during the follow ing tw o or three weeks.

(v) Surface pressure may be applied to the strip to effect a firmer bond by using a rubber mallet or by using
hand or foot pressure. To increase efficiency, several strips may be sprayed simultaneously.

IMPORTANT:

! SOME STRIP-FORMING MATERIALS SW ELL W HEN EXPOSED TO MO ISTURE.
USER SHOULD DETERMINE THE EXPANSION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STRIP
MATERIAL BEING USED AND PROVIDE APPROPRIATE GAPS BETWEEN STRIPS.

! FAILURE TO GAP MAY RESULT IN BOW ING OR LIFTING OF SECTIONS OF THE
FORM OR STRIP.

(vi) After surface contact is made, the item bonded to the casting bed surface should feel firm and solid and be
free of any movement. In the event that a strip appears to be loose or needs to be re-positioned after it is
attached to the slab surface, the entire strip should be removed by inserting a flat scraper or blade under one
end and lifting. BOTH surfaces should be re-sprayed with adhesive and allowed to dry to touch.

IMPORTANT:

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR AN AREA OF FAILED ADHESION BY PRYING UP A
SINGLE PORTION OF THE STRIP AND SPRAYING ADHESIVE IN BETWEEN THE
CONTACT SURFACES. ALWAYS REMO VE AND RE-SPRAY THE ENTIRE STRIP.

MILCO / TrusJoist® Forming System Page 5 of 9 PRECAST INSTRUCTION SHEET
(vii) Prior to the pouring of the concrete, a LIGHT coating of bond-breaker material may be applied to all
exposed strip surfaces to reduce the risk of spalling and other damage to the concrete during lift-up and
removal of the strips.

B. ATTACHMENT OF EDGE FORMS, PANEL FORMS AND SIDE PANELS:

The MILCO / TrusJoist® Penetration-free Forming System is based upon the use of MILCO Adjust-a-Trak
“EdgeTrak and “CommonTrak forms re-useable, height-adjustable PVC U-shaped channel tracks with
built-in 45-degree chamfers at the base (See MILCO Website for printable diagrams of MILCO’s EdgeTrak and
CommonTrak).

(I) With the MILCO / TrusJoist® System, quick installation of edge forms and common form s is made in four
easy steps:

(1) Adjust-a-Trak EdgeTrak or CommonTrak sections are installed against a chalk line on the casting bed w ith
MILCO Tilt-Up Spray Adhesive.

(2) A 1" x 1½ - wide spacer of pre-determined height is inserted into the track’s channel, resting on the bottom
surface. The spacers are placed along the Adjust-a-Trak as necessary to support the ends of each length of
TrusJoist® LSL panel that will rest on top of the spacer.

(3) Follow ing installation of the spacers, 1c TrusJoist ® TimberStrand ® LSL panel forms of a pre-determined
height are inserted into the Adjust-a-Trak channel and seated on top of the spacers.

(4) For the last step, TrusJoist® TimberStrand® LSL 8" x 8" blocks are installed on 24" centers on the floor of
the casting bed along the perimeter edges of the EdgeTrak with MILCO Tilt-Up Spray Adhesive and then “L-
brackets are screwed into place on the block and against the LSL and EdgeTrak to assure sufficient lateral
strength.

(ii) When calculating panel layout, note that the exterior width of the vertical sidewalls of the MILCO “Adjust-a-
Trak Common-Trak is 1¼, including wall thickness. The built-in chamfer extends outw ards and upw ards ¾
at a 45 N angle at the base of either sidewall. The TrusJoist ® LSL panel form is 1c wide.

IMPORTANT:

! THE MILCO / TRUSJOIST® “SYSTEM REQUIRES THE US E O F 8 " X 8 " OR LARGER
® ®
TRUSJOIST TIMBE R S T RAND LSL BLOCKS FOR ATTACHING EDGE FORMS AND SIDE
PANELS AND OTHER BARRIERS THAT W ILL BE SUBJECT TO LATERAL STRESS DURING
THE POURING OF CONCRETE IN CONJUNCTION W ITH THE USE O F MILCO TILT-UP SPRAY
ADHESIVE.

! DO NOT REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE LSL BLOCKS BELOW 8" x 8".

! DO NOT USE ANY OTHER MATERIALS SUCH AS PLYW OOD, CUT LUMBER, MDF, ETC.,
FOR BLOCKING MATERIAL.

(iii) Use only 8" x 8" or larger Weyerhaeuser / TrusJoist TimberStrand ® LSL blocks in combination w ith “L-
brackets or other suitable lateral-bracing devices. Brackets should be attached to the blocks and edge forms
w ith dry-w all screws or similar devices. The use of nails should be avoided in order to prevent accidental
release of adhesion and to facilitate the re-use or re-positioning of blocks. MILCO strongly recommends against
the use of cut lumber for edge form support blocks due to surface irregularities, variations in moisture content
and warping. TimberStrand ® LSL blocks may be re-used multiple times so long as the adhesive contact surface
is kept clean and flat.

(iv) The LSL blocks should be located along the edge form on minimum 24" centers to assure sufficient lateral
strength in order to prevent an “overturn during pouring.

MILCO / TrusJoist® Forming System Page 6 of 9 PRECAST INSTRUCTION SHEET
(v) Generally follow the application instructions set forth in Section “A above, EXCEPT THAT TWO (2) COATS
OF ADHESIVE SPR AY SH O U LD BE APPLIED ON EACH NEW LSL BLOCK for added adhesion due to the
presence of lateral stresses against the forms after the concrete pour. A single coat on the casting bed floor
surface is sufficient to provide adequate adhesion. WHENEVER AN LSL BLOCK IS RE-USED AFTER ITS FIRST
ATTACHMENT , A SIN G LE COAT OF MILCO TILT-UP SPRAY ADHESIVE WILL SUFFICE FOR EACH JOB
THEREAFTER.

(vi) When spraying the second coat on the LSL block, wait until the first adhesive coat becomes “tacky, but
does not transfer, to apply the second coat of adhesive. Follow ing application of the second adhesive coat,
allow the surfaces to become dry to touch. When “dry, the adhesive should not be “sticky to touch or capable
of transfer. Drying time w ill vary depending upon relative humidity, temperature and moisture levels. (Refer
to Step 2 above.) If expedient, the first coat may be applied hours or even days before the second coat which
w ould be applied at the time of application to the casting bed floor surface. DO N O T FO R C E-D RY THE
ADHESIVE AFTER IT IS APPLIED as its contact properties may be adversely affected.

STEP 6 - RE-USE, EQUIPMENT STORAGE, MAINTENANCE & SHUT DOWN:

A. RE-USE:

IMPORTANT:

AT THE END OF EACH DAY:

! TIGHTEN THE APPLICATOR ADJUSTMENT NUT TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL
RELEASE OF ADHESIVE.

! ALWAYS LEAVE THE CYLINDER VALVE OPEN AND THE HOSE AND
APPLICATOR PRESSURIZED BETWEEN JOBS TO PREVENT CLOGGING.

! REMOVE NOZZLE AND CLEAN IT AND THE WAND-HEAD MOUNTING
SURFACE WITH 3Mâ„? ADHESIVE REMOVER CITRUS BASE AND A WIRE
BRUSH. PLACE NOZZLE BACK ON WAND AFTER CLEANING AND TIGHTEN.

! KEEP CYLINDER, PRESSURIZED HOSE AND SPRAY APPLICATOR AT A
TEMPERATURE OF AT LEAST 60 " OVERNIGHT.

B. BETWEEN SEPARATE APPLICATIONS: To extend hose life, DO NOT CLOSE CYLINDER VALVE BETWEEN
SEPARATE APPLICATIONS. If the cylinder valve is closed after an application and before depletion of the
cylinder contents w ith the hose still attached, the hose may become clogged w ith adhesive and need to be
replaced. If there is to be a delay betw een applications, store cylinder w ith VALVE OPEN (hose pressurized) at
an ambient air temperature of betw een 60ÂşF (15.5ÂşC) and 85ÂşF (29.4ÂşC). Use care to avoid cutting or puncturing
pressurized delivery hose or loosening hose connections. Place a tag on the applicator notifying users that
the hose is pressurized.

C. REPLACEMENT OF AN EMPTY CYLINDER DURING APPLICATION: To replace an empty cylinder during an
application, the follow ing procedure is recommended:

(I) WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES AND GLOVES at all times.

(ii) Position full replacement cylinder next to spent cylinder with hose still attached.

(iii) C lose empty cylinder valve completely. To avoid seal damage, do not over-tighten. Point spray nozzle /
applicator away from people and spray any remaining pressurized material in hose onto waste material or other
expendable surface until all pressure is released.

(iv) Wearing protective goggles and gloves, slowly loosen the hose fitting from the cylinder outlet. Remove hose
from spent cylinder, taking care to keep the fitting-end pointed upw ards to avoid spilling adhesive.

MILCO / TrusJoist® Forming System Page 7 of 9 PRECAST INSTRUCTION SHEET
(v) Immediately connect hose fitting to the full cylinder outlet and tighten. Slowly open the new cylinder valve
to pressurize the hose with adhesive. Open the cylinder valve fully, then close 1/4 to ½ turn. Recharge the hose
w ith adhesive material by pointing the spray nozzle / applicator away from people and spraying a short burst
onto waste material or other expendable surface until adhesive appears.

C. LONG TERM STORAGE OF HOSE AND SPRAY GUN: For best results, use cylinder contents w ithin 16
months of purchase date. If the hose and spray gun are not going to be used for extended periods of time,
clean out the hose and nozzle w ith 3Mâ„? Adhesive Remover Adhesive Citrus Base (...available from your MILCO
distributor) before remaining adhesive dries. The tip can also be cleaned with masking tape or a small wire
brush before the adhesive is completely dried. Follow nozzle manufacturer’s cleaning and storage instructions.
Hose may need to be replaced for next application if an excessive amount of adhesive residue remains inside.
CAUTION: When using solvents, extinguish all ignition sources and follow the manufacturer’s precautions and
directions for use.

STEP 7 - DETACHING STRIPS & FORMS FROM FLOOR SURFACE: After the panel is poured, detach strips and
forms from floor surface by inserting a flat scraper or blade under one end and lifting. Take care not to scratch
the floor surface.

STEP 8 - RESIDUE REMOVAL:

When MILCO Spray Adhesive is applied directly to a casting bed surface, adhesive residue remaining on the
casting bed after tilt-up may be cleaned up w ith a w ire brush or 3Mâ„? Adhesive Remover Citrus Base, which
is available from your MILCO distributor. Allow at least 2 HOURS for the Adhesive Remover to flash off solvent
content before applying MILCO Spray Adhesive.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS:

— “BUBBLES APPEAR ON SPRAYED SURFACES: This condition may result if proper spraying distance has
not been maintained (at least 2.5 inches) or if adhesive product has been allow ed to “dry or otherw ise partially
solidify within the delivery hose or the applicator, or if the nozzle has become partially plugged.

SOLUTION: (1) Take care to maintain proper spraying distance (2.5 to 3.5 inches) during application;
(2) Clean delivery hose and/or nozzle with 3Mâ„? Adhesive Remover C itrus B ase (available from your
MILCO distributor) or replace if necessary; (3) Remove adhesive from “bubbled area w ith 3M
Adhesive Remover Citrus Base and re-spray. Areas where the adhesive has bubbled will not adhere
properly.

— DURING APPLICATION, PRODUCT “SPUTTERS AND DELIVERY IS INTERMITTENT: This condition may
result if adhesive product has been allowed to “dry or otherw ise partially solidify w ithin the delivery hose or
the applicator, or if the nozzle has become partially plugged.

SOLUTION: Remove nozzle and clean delivery hose and/or nozzle with 3Mâ„? Adhesive Remover Citrus
Base (available from your MILCO distributor) or replace if necessary. Check to see that all connections
are tight.
