IV FIRE AND EXPLOSION H AZARDS DATA

Flash Point: N/E or N /A Method U sed: Flam ma ble solid
Flam mab le Limits: Upper: N/E Lower: N/E Autoignition Temperature: N/A

Extingu ishing Media: Use a class D or oth er suitable m etal extingu ishing agen t.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Firefighters m ust w ear fu ll face, self-con tained breathing apparatus with protective clothing to
prevent contact with skin and eyes. Fumes from fire are hazardous. Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazard: Flam ma ble by spo ntaneou s chemical reaction, air, mo isture o r acid fum es. Ox idizes in dry air.
When heated to d ecomp osition , barium sulfide ma y em it toxic fu me s of oxides of sulfur. Reacts w ith water, m oisture or steam to
evo lve toxic an d flam ma ble hydroge n sulfide. M ay ignite violently on contact with po werful oxidizing agen ts. Ma y react violently
with phosphorus (V) oxide. Mixtures with lead dioxide, potassium chlorate or potassium nitrite explode when heated.

V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of o ur know ledge the chem ical, ph ysical and toxicolog ical pro perties of barium sulfide have not been thoro ugh ly
investigated and recorded.

Sulfid es have variable toxicity. Th e alka line sulfides (p otassiu m, calcium , ammo nium , and sodiu m) are sim ilar in action to
the alkalies. They cause softening and irritation of the skin. If ingested, they are corrosive and irritating through the liberation of
hydrogen sulfide and free alkali (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition)
Acute E ffects:

Inhalation: SEVERE IRRITAN T AN D CO RROSIV E. May cause irritation to the upper respiratory system, dizziness, nausea,
vomiting, colic, diarrhea, rapid respiration, high blood pressure, irregular heart action, convulsions, paralysis, and acute barium
poisoning.
Ingestion: SEVERE IRRITAN T AN D CO RROSIV E. May cause severe irritation to the gastrointestinal tract, vomiting, colic,
diarrhea, slow irregular pulse, transient hypertension, convulsions, tremors, muscular paralysis, and acute barium poisoning.
Skin : SEVERE IRRITANT AN D CORRO SIVE to moist skin. May cause softening and irritation.
Eye: SEVERE IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE.

Chro nic Effects:

Inhalation: May cause pulmonary edema and chronic barium poisoning.
Ingestion: May cause chronic barium poisoning.
Skin : May cause dermatitis.
Eye: May cause co rneal op acity and blindne ss.

Target Organs: May affect the up per respirato ry system , central nervous system , heart, skin and eyes.
Carcino genicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing resp iratory and skin disord ers.

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Remove from exposure; keep warm and quiet; give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention
immediately.
INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water; DO NOT induce vomiting; seek medical attention immediately.
SK IN: Remove contaminated clothing and shoes; brush material off skin; wash affected area with mild soap and water; seek medical
attention immediately.
EYES: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately.

VI REACTIVITY DATA

Stability: Stable

Co nditio ns to Av oid: None
Incompatibility (Material to Avoid): Acids, water, moisture, steam, phosphorus (V) oxide, lead dioxide, potassium chlorate and
potassium nitrite.

Haz ardous D ecomposition Produc ts: Hydrogen sulfide and oxides o f sulfides.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: We ar appropriate respira tory and protective equipm ent specified in
section VIII. Isolate spill area, provide ventilation and extinguish sources of ignition. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency
particulate absolute (H EPA) air filter and place in a closed container fo r proper d isposal. Use non -sparking tools. T ake care n ot to
raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method: Dispose o f in accord ance w ith all Federal, State, and Loca l regulations.

VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type): Wear appro priate NIOSH /MSH A-appro ved dust, mist, vapor cartridge respirator.
Ventilation: Handle in a controlled atmosphere in an inert gas such as argon. Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at or
below the PEL, TLV.

Protective Gloves: Rubb er glove s.
Eye Protection: Safety goggles

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store in a co ol, dry area. Store in a tightly sealed container. Wa sh tho roughly
after handling. Store in an inert atmosphere.

Other Precautions: Barium sulfide reacts with water, moisture and steam. Han dle and store in a controlled environm ent and an inert
gas, such as argon.

Wo rk Practices: Imp lem ent en gineering and wo rk practice controls to re duc e and ma intain c onc entration o f exp osure at low levels.
Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or
smok ing. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with comp ressed air.

The abo ve inform ation is believ ed to be co rrect, but do es no t purp ort to b e all inclu sive an d sha ll be used only as a gu ide.
ESPI shall not be held liab le for any d am age resulting from h and ling o r from contact with the abov e pro duc t.
