IV FIRE AND EXPLOSION H AZARDS DATA
Flash Point (Method used): NA Autoignition Temperature: NA
Flam mab le Limits: Upper: NA Lower: NA
Extingu ishing Media: Cover burning material with an inert powder, such as dry sand or limestone, to exclude oxygen. In case the
powder is in drums seal with a suitable lid.
Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazards: Dust may present a fire or explosion hazard under favorable conditions. However, this is not
exp ected to be a pro blem und er no rmal han dling conditions.
Special Firefighting Procedures: For powd er fire confined to a small area, use a respirator approved fo r toxic dust and fumes. For a
large fire invo lving this m aterial, fire fighters should use self-con tained bre athing ap paratus.
V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Routes of Exposure: Material can be inhaled, swallowed or come into contact with skin or eye.
Effects of Exposure: Dust inhalation may cause mild irritation of the nose and throat. Skin and eye contact may cause irritation due
to abrasive action of the dust. C urrent scien tific evid ence indicates no adverse effects are likely from a ccide ntal ing estion of sm all
am oun t of this m aterial.
EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
INHALATION: If any pulmonary symptoms develop, (coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, etc.) remove from exposure and
seek medical attention.
INGESTION: If substantial quantities are swallowed dilute with a large amount of water, induce vomiting, seek medical attention.
SK IN: If irritation occurs, wash affected area with soap and water and prevent further contact; if irritation persists, seek medical attention.
EYE: If con tact occurs, flu sh w ith copiou s am oun ts of w ater. If irritatio n persists, seek me dical attention .
Carcinogenic Assessment (NT P A nnua l Repo rt, IAR C M onograp hs, Oth ers): This material has not been identified as a known or
suspected carcinogen IARC or OSHA.
VI REACTIVITY DATA
Stability: Stable
Co nditio ns to Av oid: N/A
Incompatibility (Material to avoid): Boron carbide is oxidized by hot oxidizing acids (HN03, H 2S0 4, HC10 4). Chlorine attacks B 4C
at 600 oC, and bromine attacks it at 800 oC.
Haz ardous D ecomposition Produc ts: Boron Oxide
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur
VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES
Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: Remove all sources of ignition. Ventilate area of spill. Clean up using
methods which avoid dust generation such as vacuuming (with appropriate filter to prevent airborne dust levels which exceed the PEL
or TLV ). If airbo rne d ust is generated, use an NIO SH approved respirato r.
Waste Disposal Method: Disposal must be made in accordance with Federal, State and Local regulations. May be sold as scrap for
reclaim or returned to the produc er.
VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION
Respiratory Protection (Specify Type): Use an appropriate NIOSH approved respirator if airborne dust concentration exceeds the
appropriate PEL or TLV.
Ventilation: Use local exhaust which is adequate to limit personal exposure to levels which do not exceed the TLV.
Eye Protection: Safety glasses or goggles are necessary.
Protective Gloves: Gloves are recommended when contact is likely.
IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Keep container closed, whenever possible. Maintain good housekeeping
procedures to prevent accumulation of dust. Use clean up methods which minimize dust generation such as vacuuming or wet
cleanup. Use an appropriate NIOSH approved respirator if airborne dust concentrations exceed the appropriate PEL or TLV.
Other Precautions: Wash thoroughly after handling and before eating or smoking and at the end of the work shift. Do not shake
clothing o r othe r items to rem ove dust. U se a vacuum cleaner. Avoid dust in halatio n and dire ct skin contact. Do no t ingest.
Hazardous Transportation Regulations: Not a dangerous cargo.
TSC A Inform ation: TSCA Status: On Inventory.
