V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Effects of Exposure:
To the best of o ur know ledge the acute and chronic toxicity o f hex achloroplatinic acid is n ot fully kno wn . Exp osure to
platinum containing dusts or fumes may cause irritation, sensitization reactions and asthma. Effects include sneezing, coughing,
tightness in the chest, dyspnea and wheezing. Cyanosis is possible. Chronic exposure may result in pulmonary fibrosis. Swallowing
will lead to a strong corrosive effect on mouth and throat and to the danger of perforation of esophagus and stomach.
Carcino genicity: No classification data on carcinogenic properties of this material is available from the EPA, IARC, NTP, OSHA or
ACGIH.
EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
INHALATION: Remove patient to fresh air. Seek imm ediate medical advice.
INGESTION: Seek imm ediate medical advice.
SK IN: Flush with soap and water for 15 minutes. Seek imm ediate medical advice
EYE: Flush with eye bath. Consult a physician
NOTE: Platinu m c om pou nds, especially p latinum halogen com plexes, are se nsitizers. Sensitized p erson s, on re -exp osure to
platinu m salts, will show the clinical features o f a type 1 allergy: asthm a and /or rhinitis and /or co njun ctivitis and/or urticaria (hives).
A contact dermatitis may also occur. The symptoms of the allergic reaction to platinum salts may include any of the following: itchy
red eyes, w atering of the ey es, sneezing , runn y no se, chest tightness, w heezing, breathlessn ess, cough , eczema tous o r urticarial (nettle
rash type) skin lesions. Exposure to platinum salts in exceedingly small amounts, even below the level of physicochemical detection,
will produce symptom s in sensitized persons. Continued exposure will give symptom s of increasing severity and can eventually lead
to chronic asthm a. Th ere is a risk of an aph ylactic shoc k occurring in sensitized persons re-en cou nterin g platinum salts. Therefo re, if
sensitization has developed, further exposure to platinum compounds must not be permitted.
