Effects of Exposure: Sodium rapidly forms caustic and highly corrosive sodium hydroxide with evolution of heat. Severe thermal
and chem ical bu rns w ill result at ev ery p oint o f huma n contact.

Acute E ffects:

Inhalation: Inhalation o f dust will sev erely irritate the nasal cavity and respira tory tract.
Ingestion: Ingestion w ill cause burns an d perforations o f the gastroin testinal tract.
Skin : Seve re thermal burns, co rrosio n and ulceration of the skin m ay occur on direct contact.
Eye: Seve re thermal burns, co rrosio n and ulceration of the ey es m ay occur on direct contact.

Chro nic Effects: No info rmation available on long-term chron ic effects. Imp urities in som e min eral oils may be tum origens.

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
INHALATION: Rem ove the victim to fresh air and seek med ical attention if coughing , shortness of b reath or irritation pe rsists.
INGESTION: If ingested give the victim plenty of water and seek immediate medical attention.
SK IN: Wash the affected area with soap an d wa ter for at least 5 m inutes. Seek med ical assistance if irritation persists.
EYE: Imm ediately flush the eyes with copious amounts of water for at least 10-15 minutes. A victim may need assistance in keeping
their eyelids open. Get immediate medical attention.

place. Handle in argon.

Other Precautions: With mo isture o r huma n contact, m etal rap idly fo rms caustic and high ly corrosiv e alkali hyd roxide w ith
evolution of heat. Severe thermal and chemical burns will result. Handle and store the material under oil or argon.
