IV FIRE AND EXPLOSION H AZARDS DATA

Flash Point: N/E or N/A Method U sed: Non-Flamma ble
Explosive Lim its: Lower: NA Upper: NA

Extingu ishing Media: Use suitable extinguishing agent for surrounding materials and type of fire.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Firefighters must wear full face, self contained breathing apparatus with full protective clothing
to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Fumes from fire are hazardous. Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: When heated to decomposition, vanadium may em it toxic fumes of vanadium oxides. May
react violently with BrF 3, Cl2, Li, nitryl fluoride an d oxidants.

V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Health Hazards:

Vanadium compounds are considered to have variable toxicity. Vanadium compounds act chiefly as an irritant to the
conjunctiva and respiratory tract. Acute and chronic exposure can give rise to conjunctivitis, rhinitis, reversible irritant of the
respiratory tract, and to b ronchitis, bronc ho sp asm s, and asthm a-like diseases in m ore severe cases. In dustrial exp osure are mo stly
acute, seldom chron ic. Human vanadium poisoning sym ptoms are for the m ost part restricted to the conjunctiva and respiratory
system , no evidence being found of distu rban ces of the gastroin testinal tract, kidn eys, b lood or central nervo us system . Acu te
poisoning in animals by ingestion of vanadium compou nds causes nervous disturbances, paralysis of legs, respiratory failure,
convulsions, bloody diarrhea and death. Poisoning by inhalation causes bleeding of the nose and acute bronchitis (Sax, Dangerous
Properties of Industrial Materials. eighth edition).
Acute E ffects:
Inhalation: May cause irritation of the respiratory tract. Vanad ium com pounds m ay cau se bleeding and acute bro nchitis. Ma y cause
vanadium toxicity.
Ingestion: No acute health effects recorded.
Skin : May cause irritation.
Eyes: May cause irritation.

Chro nic Effects:

Inhalation: Van adium c om pou nds ma y cau se pn eum onia and other path olog ic sym ptom s (chronic sym ptom s of vanadium toxicity.)
Ingestion: No chronic health effects recorded.
Skin : May cause dermatitis.
Eye: May cause co njunctivitis.

Target Organs: May affect the kidn eys, respiratory system, skin and eyes.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing resp iratory disord ers.

Carcino genicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Remove from exposure, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult. Perform CPR as necessary,
treat for shock, get immediate medical attention.
INGESTION: If conscious give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting; keep warm and quiet; never induce vomiting or
give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
SK IN: Brush material off skin wash affected areas with soap or m ild detergent; remove contam inated clothing from affected area. If
irritation is present after washing, get, medical attention.
EYES: Flush eyes immediately with large amounts of water, lifting upper and lower eyelids for at least 15 minutes; if irritation
persists, g et medica l attention.

Notes to Ph ysician (inclu ding A ntidotes): Inhalation or ingestion of metallic vanadium (as powder) posses no threat as such. The
material could react with body fluids, however, to produce toxic compounds. Calcium disodium EDT A has been shown to be
antidotal in an imal studies of vanadium com pounds. Ascorbic ac id was b eneficial in studies o f vanadium in hum ans.

VI REACTIVITY DATA

Stability: Stable

Co nditio ns to Av oid: None
Incompatibility (Material to Avoid): Oxidizers, strong bases, acids, Cl2, Li, and nitry l fluorid e. Vanad ium will react violently w ith
chlorine above 180 oC, is readily d issolve d by nitric acid and slow ly ox idizes if th e surface is m oist.

Haz ardous D ecomposition Produc ts: Oxides of vanadium
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: We ar appropriate respira tory and protective equipm ent specified in this
MSD S. Isolate spill and provide ventilation. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA ) air filter and place
in a clo sed container fo r proper d isposal. Tak e care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method: Dispose o f in accord ance w ith Federal, State and L ocal regu lations.

VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

-Vanadium 2-
Respiratory Protection (Specify Type): For operations such as grinding or polishing, which will produce dusts of metal powder or
oxid e abo ve 0.5 m g/m 3: NIOSH approved dust-mist-fume respirator.
Ventilation: Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at low exposure levels. General exhaust is recommended.

Protective Gloves: Rubber
Eye Protection: Safety Glasses

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storing: Store in a cool dry area in a tightly sealed container, store away from
incomp atible m aterial, an d w ash thorough ly after handling . Tak e care wh en m achining or pe rform ing o perations th at pro duc e dusts
not to bre athe du sts.

Wo rk Practices: Imp lem ent en gineering and wo rk practice controls to re duc e and ma intain c onc entration o f exp osure at low levels.
Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or
smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench
shower and facilities for washing.

The abo ve inform ation is believ ed to be co rrect, but do es no t purp ort to b e all inclu sive an d sha ll be used only as a gu ide.
ESPI shall not be held liab le for any d am age resulting from h and ling o r from contact with the abov e pro duc t.
