IV FIRE AND EXPLOSION H AZARDS DATA

Autoignition Temperature: 630 oC (cloud), 430 oC (layer) Flash Point (Method used): N/A
Flam mab le Limits: Upper: N/A Lower: N/A Flam mab ility: Flam ma ble solid

Extingu ishing Media: If involved in fire, do not use water, CO 2 or halogenated extinguishers. Use dry chemical extinguishing
agents, graphite, sodium chloride, dry sand or dry ground dolomite.

Special Fire Fighting Procedures: May be flammable in fine powdered form. Use normal firefighting procedures which include
wearing NIO SH /MSH A approve d self-c ontained breathing apparatus, flam e and chem ical resistant clothing ; hats, bo ots and glo ves.
If without risk, remove material from fire area. Fumes from fire are hazardous. Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazard: Combustible in the form of dust when exposed to heat or by spontaneous chemical reaction
with Br 2, BrF 3, Cl2, ClF 3, Cu(NO 3), K 2O 2 and S. Powder oxidizes, especially in the presence of moisture.

V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

Tin compoun ds have variable toxicity. Elemental tin and inorganic tin compounds have toxicity and are poorly absorbed
when ingested. Some inorganic tin salts are irritating or can liberate toxic fumes on decomposition. The latter is particularly true of
tin halogens. (Sa x, Dang erou s Properties of Industrial M aterials, eig hth edition.)

Acute E ffects:
Inhalation: May cause irritation of the upper respiratory system, metal fum e fever, thirst, me tallic taste, coughing , fever, chills,
muscular pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, profuse sweating, excessive urination and diarrhea.
Ingestion: Poor absorption makes it relatively non-toxic.
Skin : May cause irritation.
Eye: May cause irritation.

Chro nic Effects:

Inhalation: May cause pneumonoconiosis and tin poisoning.
Ingestion: Repeated or hig h levels m ay ca use abdo min al pain , nausea, co nstipation o r diarrhea, gastric irritation and lo ss of w eight.
Skin : May cause dermatitis.
Eye: May cause co njunctivitis.

Routes of Entry: Inhalation, ing estion, skin, eye s.
Target Organs: May affect the respiratory system , skin and eyes.
Medical Conditions, if any, Aggravated by the Chemical: None known.
NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No EPA: No
Carcino genicity:

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Move the exposed person to fresh air at once. Keep warm and at rest. If breathing has stopped, perform artificial
respiration. Seek medical attention immediately.
INGESTION: Vomiting may occur, but permanent injury is unlikely. If person is conscious, give large quantities of water to drink
and induce vomiting. Get medical attention as soon as possible.
SK IN: Remove contaminated clothing form affected area. Brush material off skin, wash with mild soap and water. Seek medical
attentio n if sym ptom s persist.
EYES: Flush eye s imm ediately w ith large am ounts of water, lifting the low er and upper lids occasion ally. If irritation persists,
consult a physician.

VI REACTIVITY DATA

Stability: Stable
Co nditio ns to Av oid: None
Incompatibility (Material to Avoid): Carbon tetrachloride + water, disulfur dichloride, bromide, bromine trifluoride, chlorine
trifluoride, chlorine, iodine bromide, copper (II) nitrate, fluorine, iodine heptafluoride, ammonium nitrate, potassium dioxide, sodium
pero xide, sulfur, tellurium , mo lten tin + water. Co ncentrated acid s, oxid ants. Fires and explosio ns can occur w hen me tallic tin is in
contact with turpentine.

Haz ardous D ecomposition Produc ts: Tin oxides.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: We aring full pro tective equipm ent, described in section VIII, isolate
spill area , prov ide ventilation and extingu ish sou rces o f ignition. Scoop or vacuu m u p spill using a high efficien cy particulate
absolute (HE PA) air filter and place in a closed co ntainer for p roper d isposal. Tak e care no t to raise dust. Use n on-sparking tools.

Waste Disposal Method: Dispose o f in accord ance w ith Loca l, State and Federal w aste disposal reg ulations.

VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type): NIOSH /MSH A app roved high efficiency particle respirator.
Ventilation: Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at or below PEL, TLV. Mechanical exhaust is not recommended. When
working with powders, handle in a controlled and enclosed process in an inert atmosphere.

-Tin 2-
Protective Gloves: Rubb er glove s.
Eye Protection: ANSI app roved safety glasses. W hen w orking with po wder form do no t wear co ntact lenses.

Other Protective Equipment: Chemical resistant coveralls, lab coat or apron.

IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Avoid d ust generation. A void breathing dust o r fum e. Keep co ntainer tightly
closed. Store in a cool (-18 to 38 oC), dry, well-ventilated area. Wash thoroughly after handling.

Other Precautions: Tin powder oxidizes in moisture. Handle and store in a dry, controlled atmosphere.

Wo rk Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure. Use good
housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. Shower
and chan ge clothes at the end of worksh ift. Do no t blow dust off clothing or skin with com pressed air.

The abo ve inform ation is believ ed to be co rrect, but do es no t purp ort to b e all inclu sive an d sha ll be used only as a gu ide.
ESPI shall not be held liab le for any d am age resulting from h and ling o r from contact with the abov e pro duc t.
