IV FIRE AND EXPLOSION H AZARDS DATA

Flash Point: N/E or N /A Method U sed: Non-flam ma ble Autoignition Temperature: N/A
Explosive Lim its: Lower: N/A Upper: N/A

Extingu ishing Media: Use suitable extinguishing media for surrounding materials and type of fire.
Special Firefighting Procedures: Firefighters m ust w ear fu ll face, self-con tained breathing apparatus with full pro tective clothing to
prevent contact with skin and eyes. Fumes from fire are hazardous. Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: When heated to decomposition, vanadium sulfide may emit toxic fumes of vanadium and
sulfur oxides. May react with w ater, steam o r acids to produce toxic and flam mab le vapors of hydro gen sulfide which m ay form
explosive m ixtures with air. May ignite violently and ex plosively o n con tact with po werfu l oxidizers.

V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of vanadium sulfide have not been
thoroughly investigated and recorded.

Vanadium compounds are considered to have variable toxicity. Vanadium compounds act chiefly as an irritant to the
conjunctivae and respiratory tract. Acute and chronic exposure can give rise to conjunctivitis, rhinitis, reversible irritation of the
respiratory tract, and to b ronchitis, bronc hospasm s, and asthm a-like diseases in m ore severe cases. In dustrial exp osures are mo stly
acute, seldom chron ic. Human vanadium poisoning sym ptoms are for the m ost part restricted to the conjunctivae and respiratory
system , no evidence being found of distu rban ces of the gastroin testinal tract, kidn eys, b lood or central nervo us system . Acu te
poisoning in animals by ingestion of vanadium compou nds causes nervous disturbances, paralysis of legs, respiratory failure,
conv ulsions, bloo dy diarrhea an d death . Poisoning by inhalation causes bleeding o f the nose and ac ute bron chitis.

Sulfides of the heavy metals are generally insoluble and hence have little toxic action except through the liberation of
hydrogen sulfide.

Hy drogen sulfide is a huma n po ison b y inh alation . A sev ere irritan t to the eyes and m uco us m em bran es. An asph yxiant.
The irritant action has been explained on the basis that hydrogen sulfide combines w ith alkali present in moist surface tissues to form
sodium sulfide , a caustic. Hy drogen sulfide does not com bine with the hem oglo bin o f the blood ; it's asphy xiation is due to paralysis
of the respiratory center. It is an insidious poison since sense of smell may be fatigued. The odo r and irritation effects do not offer a
dependable warning to workers who may be exposed to gradually increasing amounts and therefore become used to it. (Sax,
Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eight edition)

Acute E ffects:

Inhalation: SEVERE IRRITANT. May cause irritation of the respiratory tract. Vanadium compounds may cause nasal bleeding and
acute bronchitis. May cause vanadium toxicity.
Ingestion: SEVERE IRRITANT. May cause gastrointestinal irritation.
Skin : SEVERE IRRITAN T. May cause irritation to moist skin due to liberation of hydrogen sulfide.
Eye: SEVERE IRRITANT.

Chro nic Effects:

Inhalation: Vanadium compounds may cause pneumonia and other pathological symptoms (chronic symptoms of vanadium
toxicity). Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause pneumoco niosis, coma and pulmonary edem a.
Ingestion: No chronic health effects recorded.
Skin : May cause dermatitis.
Eye: May cause co njunctivitis.

Target Organs: May affect the kidn eys, respiratory system, skin and eyes.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing resp iratory disord ers.
Carcino genicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention
immediately.
INGESTION: If conscious, give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and DO NOT induce vomiting, seek medical attention imm ediately.
SK IN: Rem ove any contam inated clothing, b rush ma terial off of skin, flush with running water, wash carefu lly with soap and w ater.
Seek medical attention imm ediately.
EYE: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately.

VI REACTIVITY DATA

Stability: Stable
Co nditio ns to Av oid: None
Incompatibility (Material to Avoid): Water, steam , moisture, pow erful oxid izing age nts and acids.

Haz ardous D ecomposition Produc ts: Oxides of vanadium and sulfur.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES
Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: We ar appropriate respira tory and protective equipm ent specified in
section VIII. Isolate spill and provide ventilation. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and
place in a closed container fo r proper d isposal. Tak e care not to raise dust.

-Vanadium Sulfide 2-
Waste Disposal Method: Dispose o f in accord ance w ith Federal, State and L ocal regu lations.

VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type): NIOSH -approved dust-mist-fume respirator.
Ventilation: Handle in an inert gas such as argon in a controlled, enclosed environment. Use local exhaust to maintain concentration
at low exposure levels. General exhaust is not recommended.

Eye Protection: Safety glasses
Protective Gloves: Rubber gloves

Other Protective Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store in a co ol, dry area. Store away from in com patible material. Sto re in
tightly sealed container. Wash thoroughly after handling. Vanadium sulfide may react in moist air. Handle and store in a controlled
environment and inert gas such as argon.

Wo rk Practices: Maintain good housekeeping procedures and implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and
maintain concentration of exposure at low levels. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly after handling and
before eating or smoking and at the end of the work shift. Do not shake clothing or other items to remove dust. Use a vacuum. Do
not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Avoid dust inhalation and direct skin contact. Maintain eyewash capable of
sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.

The abo ve inform ation is believ ed to be co rrect, but do es no t purp ort to b e all inclu sive an d sha ll be used only as a gu ide.
ESPI shall not be held liab le for any d am age resulting from h and ling o r from contact with the abov e pro duc t.
