8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION
Exposure Standards

No exposure standards are available for this product, however, the following exposure standards have been assigned by
[NOHSC] to the following components of the product:

PETROLEUM ETHER
(ACGIH)
[TWA] 300 ppm

XYLENE
[NOHSC]
3
[TWA]80 ppm 350 mg/m

[STEL] 250 ppm 328 mg/m
Notices: H

Engineering Controls
Highly flammable liquid. Maintain adequate ventilation at all times. Prevent accumulation of vapours in hollows or
sumps. Eliminate any sources of ignition. Elevated temperature or mechanical action may form vapours, mists or fumes
which may require local exhaust ventilation systems.

Personal Protection Equipment
GLOVES: Not normally required, however, if product has spilt, or package is broken, then the use of neoprene gloves
is recommended.
EYES : Chemical goggles or faceshield to protect eyes.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Avoid breathing of vapours/gases. Select and use respirators in accordance with
AS/NZS 1715/1716. When gases/vapours exceed the exposure standards then the use of a half-face respirator fitted with
an organic vapour cartridge is recommended. For high concentration use an atmosphere-supplied, positive pressure
demand self-contained or airline breathing apparatus, complying with the requirements of AS/NZS 1715 is
recommended. Filter capacity and respirator type depends on exposure levels and type of contaminant.

Methanol:

Swallowing as little as 28 - ~ 130 g of methanol has been reported to cause death of serious irreversible injury such as
blindness in humans. Studies in experimental animals indicate that the metabolism of methanol to formic acid results in
metabolic acidosis and reversible or irreversible damage to the optic nerve. Ingestion of this product, even in small
amounts, can cause blindness and death. Onset of symptoms may be delayed for 18 - 24 hours.

Rat
Inhalation LC50(rat): 64000 ppm/4H
Oral LD50(rat): 5628 mg/kg

Irritation - Rabbit Draize test skin

Dermal LD50(rabbit): 20 mg/24H
REACTION: Moderate

ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS
Swallowed:
Harmful if swallowed. Product forms methanol on exposure to water or humidity, which will cause damage to the
central nervous system and if exposure is prolonged blindness, due to effects on the optic nerve will occur. Vomiting,
may cause this product to be aspirated into the lungs, which may lead to chemical pneumonitis.

Eye:
May cause irritation to the eyes, with effects including: tearing, pain, stinging and blurred vision.

Skin:
Harmful by skin contact. Product may be absorbed through the skin with resultant toxic effects.
Will cause irritation to the skin, with effects including; Redness, itchiness, and drying/defatting.

Inhaled:
Harmful if inhaled. May cause central nervous system and systemic poisoning as outlined for swallowing.
May cause irritation to the nose, throat and respiratory system with effects including: Dizziness, headache, coughing,
loss of co-ordination, chest pains and narcosis.

Chronic:
Prolonged or repeated skin contact may lead to dermatitis.
Prolonged or repeated exposure or deliberately concentrating and inhaling the vapour(s) may result in lung function
incapacity or death.
